Strewth! Haven't watches got BIG! It used to be that the watchmakers art was miniaturisation. That nice old Rolex up there ^^^^ looks about the right size (and reminds me that my brother bought a new one, must be 60 years ago, hmmm....wonder if he still has/uses it?).

One or two of those posted reminded me that the horologist that services my clocks has some nice old fob watches for sale. (I quite fancy one but I'm not going to start wearing waistcoats again ).

Watches do seem to me massive nowadays! The Rolex above is 36mm which is perfect for me but the crystal marks easily so I don't usually wear it for work (I work on construction plant quite a bit).
My Omega Seamaster is 42mm and that's as big as I would like to wear!

That doesn't see so bad over the last 15 years.
I've read various reports about how frequently to service watches and some just say wear em till they start being bad at keeping time and service them then.
According to some of the people on Youtube doing it Rolex's are nice to work on with lots of bridges instead of not many bridges covering far more pivots with each bridge.

They're based close to me in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, prices are good and the work seems pretty top notch. They serviced my Rolex, replaced the mainspring, crystal, great wheel and third wheel plus testing etc for £350 in 2021, all work recordered with photos and it keeps perfect time since.

I do that too, ever since I got my first watch. Not sure why I did it in the first place but couldn't change now. (It covers a scar but that's not why I did it, just seemed logical. (The scar's from playing on a building site not from an attempt to progress to the next life ).

I did smash the glass on my first watch but otherwise don't think the subsequent ones have suffered particularly.

According to the missus it's 'an engineer thing'! We'll have to get Dazzle to do a work survey.

My piano teacher used to wear his watch inside the wrist. He said it was because at his school they weren't allowed to wear a watch, so all the pupils wore them inside, they could then pretend to be scratching their foreheads when checking the time. (or something, this was approx 40 years ago that I was attempting to be taught piano).

Random watch observation today....the "Donor Carer" who took my blood today had a Garmin, but she had it pinned to her shirt 'cause of course they're all naked below the elbow. It was the classic nurse's upside-down-pin-strap afair with a purpose made strap, but it stuck me as weird that you'd use a Garmin like that 'cause it can't read your heart rate etc. You still get a step count I suppose.

They may have been wearing a HRM strap elsewhere upon their person, if heart rate is important to them, mayhaps they just wanted to be able to keep up with their snapchat

Garmin HRM are inbetween an educated guess and completely inaccurate (in my experience). I wear an external aftermarket one

Just to be awkward, wearing mine on the inside of my wrist while movingq 300 kilo timber frames* was what knackered the glass on mine.
To be fair, it was scratched to feck so I had a sapphire crystal lined up for it in a cupboard.


*there were two other people helping me with them so I wasn't on my own. Plus we had a crane to lift them the main way up, we just had to firtle em into position. Sometimes with great force.

Mine is pretty battered as well, on the case, but the sapphire crystal glass has managed to stay scratch free for 15 years somehow!

I've been vaguely looking at watches - not sure I really NEED one but that doesn't seem to be the reason for having/wearing one!!

But I have quite narrow wrists and TBH, all the ladies watches I might like (Swatch mainly) are freaking HUGE!!! I can't imagine having something that size on my wrist all day. It's a shame really as there are a couple I like quite a lot

But also, the straps for Swatch are mainly silicone - don't like that at all. So I have to try harder to find the old red Swatch I have somewhere - in a safe place, haven't seen it for ages But haven't worn it for almost as long as I've owned it!! (Was a gift about 25 years ago!)

I'm not keggy-handed or anything. It seems logical as it's easier to fasten/unfasten with the right hand and it's easier to press any buttons (not that watches had buttons when I started wearing a watch ).

I LOVE this one, but, it's 42mm diameter - I think that's very nearly the width of my wrist!!

And, not sure I want a watch called "mission to uranus" on my wrist
