Cad software recommendations

Post by dern »

This is for home use for metal based projects. I know nothing about this type of application but am hoping to use it for design, visualising the results and for producing a parts cut list. Free good, cheapish ok. Mac ideally but pc is ok. Thanks.

The free version of SketchUp is browser based so should work on mac. I dunno if it will do all what you need though.

There are lots to chose from and it really comes down to how long you want to spend learning it before you can use it proficiently.

Fusion 360 is the one most people will recommend it also has one of the longest learning curves, there is a free version.
Onshape is popular, there is a free version but all your designs are public.
FreeCad is another popular one but many people find it unintuitive and hard to learn.
Tinkercad the easiest learn and use, it is based around primitive manipulation but they have recently added a sketch based feature. Its basic compared to the others but surprising what you can do with it when you get creative. I use this one a lot.

There are lots of videos comparing the differnt free Software options on YT and they mostly are looking at them from a 3D printing point of view
but they are still helpful to get an idea on which ones might suit you.
