Lovely walk around Haughmond Hill, just outside Shrewsbury. They've got a little cafe that i didn't bother with. Various marked walks with nice views of Shrewsbury and the Hills beyond.

I did think about having some Benelli time but roads were dodgy so the walking boots went on.

I guess those stones represent what the various quarries have to offer. Nice.

Shite day. F-i-L had a stroke a few days ago and is in critical care unit. I went to see him today and well, the lights are on but no ones home etc. I think its a question of if he comes back from this, how much of him comes back, iyswim? My wife lost her mum in Fabruary, so this is hitting her hard. Grim.

On Monday my wife was told there isn't anything else they can do for him, and they will move him to a ward and keep him comfortable (palliative care). I went to see him, and he was eyes shut and non-responsive to my voice, but occasionally looking up to the left side with his eyes flickering and was told that these moments were likely small seizures. All very upsetting and I left after an hour. Today he is awake and sitting in a chair, but basically chatting shit! I don't know if this is a last rally, swansong type thing, or if he is going to come out of it? Off up there now to see for myself...

I corrected him and said it was a parallel twin, and he said of course it was. Then told me about a photo he had taken on it and did i have a copy. This is a photo thats hes always banging on about one of us finding it, denying he ever lost it! He also remembered his planes too! So I could steer the conversation and he'd have recollections! I have no idea if he'll recover or even whether he'll be here next week, but its certainly a remarkable transformation compared to just a few days ago when were told he was probably at end of life!

My wife has worked a lot on palliative care and in the past she's told me that people can appear to make a great recovery just before the very end, I hope it's better news but be prepared.

Been waiting for today since about February!!!

It is possible to buy decent cheddar out here, but it's pricey (not surprisingly!)

A couple of times a year, Lidl do an offer on Wyke Farms Cheddar - for those that know, this is a farm in Somerset (not quite in Cheddar tho!) that does make very very good cheddar.

What always makes me laugh is that when someone on any of the FB pages shares the offer you get loads of people posting to criticize saying "why would you buy cheddar when France makes 1000's of amazing cheeses" - well, they do indeed make a LOT of great cheese, but not one is like an extra mature or Vintage cheddar !!! (Actually that's not quite true, if you can source a VERY VERY mature Beaufort that does have a decent 'kick' to the taste but the price )

And the other thing they all post is - "our local x, y or z supermarket always stocks cheddar of various strengths" - they do indeed, but not at the Lidl price = 9,97€ /kg


So, today I went to the new Lidl in Moutiers (cos the one in Bourg is horrible and pretty Rubbish - and the brits clear the shelves of this offer at opening time!!).

I am now a very happy Noggs cos I have a fridge full (over full in all honesty) of very excellent cheddar I also got two very large cauliflowers for a VERY excellent price ( they've been over 3,50€ a piece for a long time, this are huge and cost 1,49€). So, even when I've made a ton of cauli cheese for the freezer, I still have a load left - hopefully will last until the next offer.

I have never bought so much cheese in one go Some of it will end up in the freezer cos whilst it lasts aaaaages in the fridge, if I hide some in the freezer, I'll get a nice surprise at some point

tBF, I do like those fruity ones and a decent bit of bleu - but absolutely nothing beats an absolutely great cheddar

Sadly my French colleague prefers the less mature, the extra mature was apparently too strong for him So I directed him to the local supermarket who sell a decent mature cheddar (just not extra!!), also made by Wyke Farms, just branded as the supermarket's own brand!!
