On the bike I stick to 30 and 40 limits rigorously

Me too, but I found the 20 limits in the Cotswolds really hard to stick to. I was pretty much in 1st to do it, 2nd was more comfortable but then it was so hard to find yourself not doing 25/26 as the bike would naturally creep up. In the end after noticing that I seemed to be the only one trying, all the cars were doing 25-30, I found myself breaking my golden rule. I get 20s in places and times, but all villages being 20 is bobbins, I was spending more time faffing with my speed than concentrating on the road, it's an unnatural speed for most vehicles.

IIRC when I did my test originally, the Highway Code at the time was stil showing braking distances for (iirc) a Ford Anglia (which was at that time at least 30 years old, at best).

@Rockburner: I think the “braking “ component is still regarded as useful, but there are discussions regarding the “thinking” part. First you have to decide that it really IS an emergency, and that takes extra time. It’s not just somebody banging on the dashboard to tell you it is, which is what the driving test teaches you.

Many, if not most, crashes are predictable, can be expected, so mentally prepared for.

Car at a junction? It might pull out.

Blind left bend? Expect the radius to tighten, oncoming vehicle to clip the centreline, poor surface, obstruction, vehicle emerging from the left.

Most bike crashes fall into just three 'gotcha' categories: SMIDSY, running out of talent mid-bend, overtaking clusterfuck.

For some riders, these individual events will be a shock, a surprise, they'll be startled.

Same event, potentially different outcome.

That any rider should decide to abdicate responsibility ... Should that be a surprise?

Well I did my speed awareness course this morning and did actually learn something but mostly it was very straightforward.

It became evident after a while that a few of the guys were looking at what I was doing when we were being asked to raise hands but the course trainer noticed and gave them most of the follow up questions

I also added something to the hazard perception section that the course trainer hadn't considered which I think I learned from here / TRC (that worn hazard lines on bends indicating that many people run wide or cut the bend) so I got a brownie point lol

I wanted to brag that I could have been doing maybe 100mph more if I'd tried my best but the opportunity didn't arise
