I use GenAI for work. It does a reasonable job but it's like having a bunch of work experience kids that churn loads of work out but need a lot of checking.

In the decking example it hasn't created that good advice, it's pinched it from someone else without credit. I fear people will be less likely to create original content and AI will be left to learn from a bunch of adverts left by other AI bots, the internet will become dumber.

From what I've read, that's already happening, a) quite badly, and b) faster than expected.

I'm also in the camp of using AI in my job - I have to review a lot of technical submissions for compliance against 100's of standards, and AI helps massively. It's not always 100% correct but does save me a lump of time!

A work colleague asked me for tyre recommendations for his new EMTB (the OE fitment are a touch "daring") so I gave him my tyre choices and the reasons behind them. He plugged this into his AI which replied I was technically correct though pedantic so that's one of my life goals achieved.

Bloody google AI can't tell the difference between ISO and AS/NZ ISO standards and will quite happily interchange between the 2 regardless of the fact they can be very different, bloody useless.

I know you meant the decking search. But, as a reasonable guide, as a minimum it's a good idea to check the linked references.

I saw the term 'tourniquet conversion'. Knew what a tourniquet is, but not the 'conversion' bit.

Google AI gave a fair description, that it's when bleeding is controlled (eg by direct pressure) so the tourniquet can be removed.

It used the term 'reversible injuries', apparently such as 'amputation'. For geckos, perhaps, but not for most of us!

Right but at the end of the day it's a language model that's a useful research partner, not something to be obeyed. Unless you're the sort of dumbarse that drives in to a lake because their tomtom told them to, you can work out that you can't stick your head back on

I may be being pessimistic, but id say roughly 75% of the population wouldn't disobey their sat nav...

Aaah, you've seen the photos of cars (and the odd bus) parked on the pistes as well? Or on the beach, etc etc etc
