I have an urge to get a tattoo....
Spare me your thoughts on good or bad, I'm 45 this year and it's on my bucket list. Not gonna be huge but I do want something you can actually see. I have a few ideas, have narrowed it down a bit but I'm in no rush so still looking for any more sparks of enlightenment. Top of the list at the mo are around the idea of a heart/piston image, the devil on a wasp from little angels album Jam, a short phrase/saying, similar to "you are not the darkness you endured but the light that refused to go out" which I quite like and a few others, a bit more generic. What about a Popeye/Naval style Anchor, but with a letter W in front of it?

I know a lot of people with words tattoos they have regretted (mainly being younger when they had it done and attitudes/partners change over time), two of them contained spelling mistakes

Once you decide on your favourite design get it printed on half a dozen t-shirts and wear them (not all at once) all the time for at least a year.
Then get your tattoo if you still want to live with it..

No need to worry about that, Tatts blur and fade, and on 45 year old skin without much elasticity they'll do it even fasterdayglo jim wrote: Tue Feb 23, 2021 9:00 pm I know a lot of people with words tattoos they have regretted (mainly being younger when they had it done and attitudes/partners change over time), two of them contained spelling mistakes

Especially the scars from tattoo removal.
I've thought about getting Munch's 'Scream' (just the face and hands) on my left shoulder.
I'm not going to though.

Re: I have an urge to get a tattoo....
Tattoos can mean something massively significant even if the thing has now passed.
I've got 2, Liverpool FC crest on my left bicep and my wifes name on my right with a chinese dragon.
Neither of them are what we'd call 'artwork' these days, they're simplistic and a bit faded, but as you can imagine, both in their own way have massive sentimental value to me, even if me and the wife split, we've been together for the best part of 20 years and have a child, so it'd still be significant.
Football plays a much smaller part in my life than it once did, but again, the tattoo has more meaning as it was when i left Liverpool and moved away at 26 years old that i had it done, it was as much about leaving my youth behind as it was the football team. But the place still plays a huge part in my history and life, despite the fact i've now lived down here almost as long and will soon surpass it.

I would have thought getting a tat of the wife’s name alongside a dragon wouldn’t be the way to a happy marriageweeksy wrote: Wed Feb 24, 2021 6:44 am Tattoos can mean something massively significant even if the thing has now passed.

Re: I have an urge to get a tattoo....
I had 3 small tattoos on my upper arms for years, and now at the age of 46 my arms are being fully sleeved up.
It’s not one thing I decided to do for vanity, but for the simple fact my daughter is training to be a tattooist and I’m more than happy to give over my arms for her to work on. Whether the work is to my taste or not, it gives me pride that she did her first tattoo on me and all the work on me will eventually be hers as we are covering the old ones as we go.

but
In terms of meaning a Chinese dragon tattoo represents: strength, power, wisdom, longevity, and good luck. As opposed to the western dragon, Chinese dragons are not violent; they are considered as protectors and helpful to mankind.

In the ideal world i'd like to have the dragon touched up and re-done by a proper artist, someone who can really make colours pop and be vibrant..Saga Lout wrote: Wed Feb 24, 2021 8:10 amI have a feeling both of them would have passed the t-shirt test (see above).weeksy wrote: Wed Feb 24, 2021 6:44 am Tattoos can mean something massively significant even if the thing has now passed.

Re: I have an urge to get a tattoo....
My mum... 60 something...is getting her first later this year. She's driving to Manchester for it, which is a bit odd given that she lives in Portsmouth where there are a million parlours due to the navy connection.
We drove to Edinburgh (from MK) for Mrs Ds. But hers are really good IMO, properly bright and crisp. They're like watercolors.

Sod what anybody else thinks.
I have a few, subtle in size and style and if people don't like them, they can look away.
