I then look at it and think "hmmm the Allen sockets should be with the torque wrench. " so may need another change.

We'll the foam sheets fit PERFECTLY in terms of depth, i've trimmed to size and got them in the box and they look ace. Still working on the layout as i pick and choose the tools that are more often used over the ones that fit best. No point having a tool i need ASAP if it's buried on the 2nd layer.

I meant to take some photos of my tool drawers to "inspire" you, I was even in the workshop last night with the opportunity.



But I didn't know if you'd find it relevant or not.

Might be worth keeping that little lot together in it's pouch and storing the pouch itself within a corner of the foam? (would it go in the case "on end" ?)

In this instance it's not how i'd lay it out in the garage for example, when in there i've got all the spanners in one drawer, all the allens in the next etc etc.. However for the MTB it's more a case of the 4/5/6/8 being in one place, the pressure gauge being in another, the hole punch in same place as that, the shock pump being in a certain place. It's more about things being exactly where they're needed and when, rather than just looking pretty. Obviously a lot of drawers are designed to look correct, but you end up in 3 places to get a couple of tools.
I've kinda got things how i want in my head but then change things a little bit each time. I sort of sit there and think "yup that's it..." but then i think "oh, do i really use those pliers often ? "

Yeah i wouldn't remove that. I've got a kit from @crust which was a present which stays in it's case, although that gets used less because of that

I'd like that in the box but would be daft to remove from it's current tray as it fits perfectly.

I used a steel rule as the outline for the "finger-holes" to keep them consistent.

I'd suggest a thin sheet of something to go between, just so any tools that happen to come a bit loose in transit don't rub on each other.

Yup, got that already when closed.

I was debating a sheet of 2mm MDF and some form of brackets, but the foam that came out of the lid does the job fine

What did you use to cut the foam? I feel like a Stanley knife would not be precise enough?

If you buy the "kit" from ShadowFoam themselves, they supply a scalpel which is ideal (iirc).
