Dunno. But £15k now vs 10 years or so pension plus the health service costs of an ageing unproductive ex-worker bee. You know what the bean counters will choose, don't you?
People should be able to choose to die if they want to.
I agree. As some people have said elsewhere about a different subject: "My body, my choice". But it should be MY choice, not coerced.

cheb wrote: Sat Jun 21, 2025 4:02 pm FWIW I'm of the opinion that anyone should be able to die at the time of their choosing and for whatever reason.

Will changes be made to life insurance policies and pensions etc? Currently some are affected if the person covered suicides.
That is a v good question.

I was under the impression that some policies will settle up early if you are diagnosed as terminally ill. (Which you need to be to get euthanased).

(Not quite the same but a chap I know went to the Docs for his annual medical - he was a freelance IT bod and I think he had to have one for his personal insurance cover.

Doc gives him a once over and says 'How long have you had this on your back?'

Mick says ''What thing?'

'This thing that looks very much like a malignant melanoma'.

Turns out it was and they got him in pronto scooped it out leaving a bit of a crater.

When he told them the insurance company paid him a considerable sum with a sort of 'we can no longer insure you, this is in full and final settlement' etc.

25 years later he's still with us. Retired, spent it, v overweight, drinks like a fish and it's most unlikely his demise will relate to the melanoma. :D ).
The plural of 'anecdote' is not 'data'.

Understandable. If I'd just seen that I would have thought he'd died as well. Even reading the article it's confusing.

Yes, I read about 1/3 of it and decided he must be dead. Only the last bit reveals he is still alive but perhaps not kicking.

"NHS services could face cuts to cover the cost of carrying out assisted deaths, the Health Secretary has warned.

"Under the Bill passed on Friday, the NHS will be expected to carry out the assisted dying procedures. Analysis suggests that implementation of assisted dying may cost the health service close to half a billion pounds within a decade, with each death costing the taxpayer more than £15,000."

Tim Wortall's response:
"You can guess, can’t you? Bully a few more of those whoi wouldf cost £50k in treatment costs to take the cheaper option.

"Anyone who does not think this will happen is a fool."
Hope much does it cost the NHS now when someone dies?

The extra cost will be the charges incurred going through all the safety checks to ensure that the operation is justified. I'm not sure how you can argue against that.

Not sure anyone is trying to coerce you....

But there's a fair few people who would appreciate this for themselves.

There's always mission creep with this sort of law. Look what happened with abortion, or, more to the point, look what is happening in Canada:
"Euthanasia in Canada ... first became legal along with assisted suicide in June 2016 for those whose death was reasonably foreseeable"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euthanasia_in_Canada

"Eligibility for MAID for persons suffering solely from a mental illness has been delayed until March 17, 2027"
https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/ ... dying.html

Just 11 years from death foreseeable to mental illness as the criteria for helping patients top themselves.

EDIT: If you think that or something like it won't happen here then you are a fool.

Why should a person in mental torment be denied the rights that accrue to someone with physical pain?

You're paraphrasing, and not very well.

Or do you think that if the rules are changed in 2027, every person with a mental illness will be able to decide to end it all today. Or do you accept that there will be a process to be followed and that simply having a mental illness will not be sufficient criteria on it's own ?

If you think that scaremongering is OK then you are a fool

This is the wrong thread, it should be in Today's News under Current Affairs etc. This will be my last post here on this subject.

You both seem to have missed the point I was making. I.e. there's always mission creep with this sort of law.

If you don't think that's mission creep, then I don't know what to tell you.

Yes, I do that. At the hospital bedside, at the care home, at the hospice... I see it first hand. I see people who want to die, they want to leave, they want it all to end, but they also want a place to go do, to have an assurance that they are loved, they are more than just this. I point them to Jesus, that is all I can do. And yes, I've seen prayers answered, I've seen people healed, I've seen pain go and smiles return. I've seen death and the dealt with the grief and pain it brings, but also the faith that those who look beyond to the far shore.

Far shore? Is that what you call your imaginary place now? In my youth it was all about joining a blonde haired bearded bloke in a long white dress on a cloud.

Sorry, but many (possibly most) of us dont believe that fairy tale any more. When I am dead I am dead. Period.

At the moment I have no wish to die, I can foresee a time (hopefully many years away) when I may. If that happens I do not my choice blocked by people who believe in fairy stories.

Sorry if that grates, I don't want to offended you but neither do I want your beliefs to override mine.
