Interesting if the are MSG as my sister will throw up if she eats a chinese which we presumed was the msg, but she scoffs cheddar like a good 'un!Mr. Dazzle wrote: Fri Nov 29, 2024 1:48 pmISTR they're pure MSG?gremlin wrote: Fri Nov 29, 2024 1:30 pm There is something very pleasing about crunching the crystals that form in a good cheddar...

It's not the MSG making her sick - unless she throws up when eating most crisps (especially Pringles!), anything make with stock cubes or after eating broccoli !!! Much more likely to be either eating too much too fast or the amount of alcohol before and with the Chinese!! (My SDad always said pickled onions made him sick, but admitted it could have been the number pints he had before the pickled onions!!Taipan wrote: Fri Nov 29, 2024 1:57 pmThought they were calcium? People are weird.Taipan wrote: Fri Nov 29, 2024 3:40 pm Yes, we've never understoood it, but every few years she'll try a Chinese again and is always ill afterwards. Can't think WTH is in a chinese that isn't in anything else, so assumed it was MSG, but clearly it isn't?![]()

Could just he she's allergic to cat meat.
They will either be crystals of monosodium glutamate or tyrosineMr. Dazzle wrote: Fri Nov 29, 2024 1:48 pmISTR they're pure MSG?gremlin wrote: Fri Nov 29, 2024 1:30 pm There is something very pleasing about crunching the crystals that form in a good cheddar...
She is not allergic to MSG - not matter what she says !! Glutamate is one of the key amino acids in you body - and we "crave" it because either makes us eat proteing so we grown and survive. MSG is just the sodium salt. Desite the wank press nobody has every had an allergic reaction to MSG. But is popular culture, obviously everyone is. But oddly never in SE Asia or China!Taipan wrote: Fri Nov 29, 2024 1:57 pmThought they were calcium? She hasn’t said anything tbf, more we’ve all struggled to find out what it is in Chinese food that does it to her? I’m starting to think it’s psychosomatic as she threw up when she tried one as a kid!Mr Moofo wrote: Fri Nov 29, 2024 5:54 pmShe is not allergic to MSG - not matter what she says !! Chinese restaurant syndrome is more down to the salt levels and alcohol that tend to dehydrate you.
She could be allergic / intolerant to sesame, celery, seafood or wheat (gluten)
However eating fried rice / boiled rice that has been left out of the fridge and eaten the next day has a very high chance of killing you.
That was my biggest issue cooking in Chalets. Soooo many people would arrive saying they were coeliac and then tuck into fresh baguette because "oh a little bit is ok" - if you are coeliac, a little bit is NOT ok. And also, the chalet host is cooking a whole different menu for one person who actually doesn't have an allergy.Cousin Jack wrote: Sat Nov 30, 2024 9:33 am Allergies are weird. Daughter used to eat Walnut Whips as a child, she now reacts violently to even a trace of walnut (as in reach for the epipen and dial 999) and is now showing signs of becoming allergic to other nuts and some seeds.
Far too many people claim allergies to stuff they just dislike and it devalues the word for those, like her, who have a real life-threatening allergy.
