Sadly, they didn't put it on the shelves till Thursday here and by the time I got into town today, the shelves had been cleared Gutted

It's not the MSG making her sick - unless she throws up when eating most crisps (especially Pringles!), anything make with stock cubes or after eating broccoli !!! Much more likely to be either eating too much too fast or the amount of alcohol before and with the Chinese!! (My SDad always said pickled onions made him sick, but admitted it could have been the number pints he had before the pickled onions!! ).

Seriously - an 'allergy' to MSG is almost impossible if only one food has that effect. MSG is in far too many foods for that to be the case. The thing about MSG making people sick was started as a way to stop people using Chinese takeaways - a form of racism


In Cheddar - I was always told it was salt crystals formed as the cheese matures (they are only in very mature cheddar).

Could be msg (haven't looked to see if it could form into crystals, I'm guessing msg is in cows milk as it's in human breast milk, so it could form the crystals I guess) but then msg tastes of salt so most wouldn't know the difference. It does have lower sodium, so very useful if you like salt but need to cut down!!

Yes, we've never understoood it, but every few years she'll try a Chinese again and is always ill afterwards. Can't think WTH is in a chinese that isn't in anything else, so assumed it was MSG, but clearly it isn't?

I can't eat fresh takeaway pizza, it gives me the squits something rotten, any other pizza, hell even the same pizza cold the next day and I'm fine.

She is not allergic to MSG - not matter what she says !! Glutamate is one of the key amino acids in you body - and we "crave" it because either makes us eat proteing so we grown and survive. MSG is just the sodium salt. Desite the wank press nobody has every had an allergic reaction to MSG. But is popular culture, obviously everyone is. But oddly never in SE Asia or China!
Chinese restaurant syndrome is more down to the salt levels and alcohol that tend to dehydrate you.

She could be allergic / intolerant to sesame, celery, seafood or wheat (gluten)

However eating fried rice / boiled rice that has been left out of the fridge and eaten the next day has a very high chance of killing you.

She hasn’t said anything tbf, more we’ve all struggled to find out what it is in Chinese food that does it to her? I’m starting to think it’s psychosomatic as she threw up when she tried one as a kid!

I was force fed parsnips at infant school as I was told they were chips.
I still really hate parsnips - they don’t make me throw up but they are one of the worst foods in the world.

Allergies are weird. Daughter used to eat Walnut Whips as a child, she now reacts violently to even a trace of walnut (as in reach for the epipen and dial 999) and is now showing signs of becoming allergic to other nuts and some seeds.

Far too many people claim allergies to stuff they just dislike and it devalues the word for those, like her, who have a real life-threatening allergy.

That was my biggest issue cooking in Chalets. Soooo many people would arrive saying they were coeliac and then tuck into fresh baguette because "oh a little bit is ok" - if you are coeliac, a little bit is NOT ok. And also, the chalet host is cooking a whole different menu for one person who actually doesn't have an allergy.

One week I had two that had marked "coeliac" on the booking form. So the first day I did everything TOTALLY gluten free. And asked them on arrival how bad their 'intolerance' was. They were totally 100% coeliac - "if you use a normal stock cube, within 30 minutes well be throwing up"! For those people I have zero problem cooking separate meals (and actually they helped me learn some stuff meaning that I could make a lot of meals gluten free without affecting the taste so for some days I didn't have to do two meals!!

As you say, people that claim allergy when it's intolerance or dislike, devalue the issue for the people that really do have allergies.
