But if you closed your eyes, and switched back and forth between them, and what you had, could you tell the difference?
(This comes from someone who has wasted a lot of money trying to get HiFi nirvana, only to realise i have significant hearing loss …)
And...is 'different' necessarily 'better'? In the end I just ended up finding something that I liked when I played the things I like*. Move house and the room acoustics improved and it sounded even better. (Not a cheap upgrade

).
I did an experiment once and stuck blu-tack or plasticene behind my ears and adjusted my tabs. A small tweak made more difference (not necessarily better but different) than changing speaker cables, running with internal power supplies rather than external etc etc etc.
Eventually I stopped bothering with upgrades and mixing stuff and bought a stack of kit by one manufacturer - inc. speakers. I upgraded the CD player after mine was serviced and they loaned me a be££er one...which, obvs, I had to have.
*I took some of my kit to a hi-fi shop to audition some speakers once upon a time. Took a mix of things to play. Put something like Joe Satriani on and said 'Hmm...these speakers aren't very rock 'n roll'. Chap says 'That's not the speakers, it's your CD player' and plugged a better one in. 30 seconds later wife says 'I want that CD player!'.
'Yes dear' sez I 'If you insist'.
