Same here, if I suggest they deserved it then it ends up as an argument and I've offended two people.
People seem to live to be offended. If they're not offended by something that can be misconstrued, then they'll get offended on someone else behalf!Screwdriver wrote: Sat Jan 28, 2023 9:20 amActually an interesting question for me. In real life, I am extremely happy go lucky. Bit of a scatterbrain and hopelessly disorganised, virtually everything I say is made in good humour and even the darkest subject can be spun into a light hearted funny.cheb wrote: Fri Jan 27, 2023 11:52 pm And why are we proud of it? Somehow and I honestly do not know why, this does not translate into the written word. I think it must be to do with the careful choice of the correct wording and an attempt to keep my propositions logically precise.
The written word appears to have a mind of its own (probably the one in the listeners head) and may have a different "meaning" to them than the standard English dictionary version.
If you often find yourself among people that are talking shit then maybe you need to change your friends?Greenman wrote: Fri Jan 27, 2023 10:08 pm
Yeah of course...I'm a straight talking man, i am the problem for many in a conversation, if they are talking complete shit!
Tone of voice, situational context and body language.Screwdriver wrote: Sat Jan 28, 2023 9:20 amActually an interesting question for me. In real life, I am extremely happy go lucky. I've not noticed that, however disagreeing with someone isn't the same as being offensive, not initially anyway.Taff wrote: Sat Jan 28, 2023 10:40 am When was the last time I offended someone?
Seemingly, every time I open my mouth or post something, so I sit in silence a lot and don't post much here or anywhere else. Nearly every time I log on here I write a reply and delete it before posting.
My wife used to call me a 'social retard'.
It's a real source of anxiety.
Taipan wrote: Sat Jan 28, 2023 8:47 am Dunno. I don't set out to offend anyone. I was bought up under the guide of if you haven't got anything nice to say, then don't say anything. If I find people offensive I'll more than likely walk off than waste my time talking to someone like that. That said I'm not shy of a retort if the situation isn't avoidable and actually calls for one. I'm deffo with Al Capone on that one!
I'm not sure how you would notice tbh, as I say, the vast majority of my drafted posts get deleted and I deliberately don't get involved with opinionated discussionsSkub wrote: Sat Jan 28, 2023 10:44 amI've not noticed that, however disagreeing with someone isn't the same as being offensive, not initially anyway.Taff wrote: Sat Jan 28, 2023 10:40 am When was the last time I offended someone?

Like @demographic and Taipan, I tend to avoid a response rather than offend someone. In general, I rarely have conversations where I need to get to the point that I might offend someone!Taipan wrote: Sat Jan 28, 2023 8:47 am Dunno. I don't set out to offend anyone. I've worked really hard to lose most of the family traits, but that tone of voice can really sound awful, and be offensive to some. 100% NOT intentional, but I haven't worked out how to get rid of it

Those are all missing from forum communication. But they make up over half the "transmission of meaning" in a face to face discussion.
That's why you have to be very careful about wording etc online.
