The town in Wales with the longest name is “Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.” The English translation of the name is:
“Saint Mary’s Church in the Hollow of the White Hazel near a Rapid Whirlpool and the Church of Saint Tysilio near the Red Cave".

Which is why postcodes were invented.

An American couple are on holiday traveling through Wales

On their way they see a sign for a place called Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch and decide to head there for something to eat. As they make their way there they debate the pronunciation of the town’s name.

They stop for lunch and one tourist asks the cashier, “Before we order, could you please settle an argument for us?” The Cashier nods.

“Would you please pronounce where we are for us – very slowly?”

The cashier leans over the counter and says, “Buurrrr Gerrrrr Kinnnnggg.”

I might be impressed if someone hadn't made it up just to get tourists to stop in a desolate place with nothing going for it.

Whenever I did a N Wales tour, over the bridge to the Edinburgh Wool shop, pick up your £20 whilst the coffin dodgers go and take a picture of the railway station sign.

Why was your £20 in the wool shop?

Harpo Marx’s parents named him Adolph.

It was, but I wasn't sure if it was a joke.

Quite a few shops offered 'incentives' to steering wheel attendants.
Which would explain why you'd see EWS in all sorts of weird and wonderful places.
Garden centres were another little earner, a back hander and a free meal, double bubble!

All I need is the hat and I can make a fortune marching in and out of tourist shops!

Talking to a French friend today about phrases that so obviously came to English from French and he told me that barbeque comes from French :o :o

Really???

Apparently from when (back a centuary or more) they would roast a pig on a stick/pole (ok, they still do but for a party rather than that's the way it's cooked!)

The stick would go in from the head/beard to the tail -

De la barbe à la queue

Barbe a queue = barbeque :D :D

:banana-dance: :banana-dance:

Another that made me laugh a bit was the song about the black death - "Atishoo, atishoo, we all fall down" !!! And the fact that we call the sound made when sneezing 'atishoo' (no idea how to write that!!)

If you sneeze here, instead of 'bless you' they say "à tes souhaits" which sounds very like atishoo - sort of!!

:geek: :geek:

Mayday is the obvious one. M'aidez, m'aidez - obviously would be written as mayday :D :D

Love finding random words or phrases that fit together or explain each other in the two languages!! LOL

Just watching Mythbusters.
Apparently JFK was buried without his brain. It was saved for several reasons.

But now they've lost it :obscene-birdiedoublered:

Not a Pearl Jam fan then.

The first track on their 5th Studio Album 'Yield' is 'Brain of J' and it starts with the lyrics...

Who's got the brain of JFK?
What's it mean to us now?

Midway through chapters in novels, authors often want a break.

This is often identified by a single, or three, asterisk

Known as a dinkus.

Before she retired, my sister was the top boss for births deaths and marriages on the Isle of Wight .

She used to marry couples at HMP parkhurst 2 or 3 times a year. She also married couples on one of those old forts in the channel. It was impossible to get to those forts in a ferrari or a porche. Boat or helicopter was the only way
