A link to the study could prove useful to the discussion.

I can't remember the original paper, I got it off Google Scholar a while ago, it was a proper peer-reviewed paper though.
The reason I remembered it was I was doom scrolling the other day and came across a clip of Joe Rogan with a bloke on saying the same thing, but that's also lost in time now as I can't remember the name of the bloke he was interviewing.

I'd forgotten about it but that reminded me about the apparent meddling in our DNA by something with capability and intelligence a couple of hundred thousand years ago, passing Vulcans probably who fancied building us in their image sans the pointy ears.

The only reason I'm vaguely hopeful about this is because if there is an intelligent design mob who created us then perhaps now is a decent time to pop back and point out that we're going at it a bit wrong. I've worked my arse off for many decades and earlier this month I put the final payment into our retirement pot that means we can now stop working whenever we want and do whatever we want for the rest of our lives - just on the eve of WW3.

A lifetime of hard work to reach a point that might not matter now, unless t'aliens come to rescue us.

Any aliens with the technical capability to visit us are likely to be so far in advance of us that they will consider Homo Sapiens much like we think of E Coli. An interesting culture, but hey ho, time to wipe it out and clean the petri dish.

They're probably streaming the result in a 'can you believe what happened next?' reality TV show to the residents of planet Tharg. A galactic Truman Show.

The Thargians are probably gathered around the water cooler howling with laughter at the events of the current season. 'Can you believe what they've done now? This is better than the 4D ming-mong ping-pong series with those tiny brained mud-slugs of Aldebaran 7 that we genetically uplifted'. 👽

We've successfully avoided WW3 since 1945, so we must be doing something right.

It was easier to start wars when folk had nothing to lose. If you start a war now, then my Amazon delivery might be late and I don't pay 7.99 a month to Prime for that sort of service. :angry-argument:

I took early retirement 3 years ago.Obviosly I hope I'm wrong, but one of my motivations was because I believe there'll be a proper big war before 2030 & there's a few more things I want to do before armageddon  ..
My mates used to laugh when I said it,not so much now...
If it all goes off later this year,at least I've got 3 pre war retirement years in,hopefully we'll all get a few more...

I too hope for a few more years before WW3 starts, but (at the risk of straying into banned territory) I do worry we may not. On the one side we have the USA with a President who can politely be described as 'different', allied to Israel driven at least in part by hard line religious zealots. On the other side we have another lot of different religious zealots with a deep and abiding hatred of both the USA and Israel. Both have significant weapons and a target-rich environment to use them. And by the way, most of those targets are highly inflammable, and supply a large % of the world's energy supplies.

What could possibly go wrong?

no-one is getting banned, but this has potential to stray into discussions that i don't really want to go down.

I know there's a LOT going on in the world at the moment and a LOT that really needs discussing... However, this isn't the place for it, simple as that.

If you've got a discussion that needs going over about the current world etc, there's loads of places other than this for that, this places stays off subject like that.

Well quite.
If this is a simulation, I seem to have been put in the one that has I'm-a-Celebrity-Get-Me-Out-Of-Here, comic-book Presidents, Middle-East sparring, and StudPony giving it the bigun all the time. Swizz.

I don't honestly believe a simulation could come up with some of the plot lines we've seen recently. They'd all be rejected as being just too ridiculous.

I really really don't like the blanket ban of subject areas like politics/world affairs. We (mostly) ride bikes, but we all live in this big world where other shit happens. Singing la-la-la and sticking your fingers in your ears wont make it go away.

Posting personal thoughts and opinions about it on here won't make it go away either. It never did before. Shame, but true. :(

Fwiw I don't like it either. But I like the arguments and bitterness it brings even less

I must be thick skinned or something. I don't get upset at stuff written on a forum, and I rarely noticed others being upset. Arguing, yes, lots of that but arguing IS discussion.

Yes but its not here. Its people ramming their opinions at others. That's not discussion, that's why it was banned.

I don't see how any good could come from it. Whatever you say, this place has a much nicer, friendly and welcoming feel these days.

But that does make it less exciting too ill admit. If I thought for a single second I could open the debates and the same people wouldn't do thr same thing again, id do it.

Funny though isn't it, Mike and Irie haven't posted again since it was closed. Funny that isn't it. Shows how much they thought of this place that as soon as their 'sport' went away, so did they.

I've noticed that, as well.So if a particular section of a (motorcycle) forum that dealt in political discourse became off-limits, then it's clear they weren't interested in the wider forum itself, only in the antagonistic bit.

The forum is a much, much nicer place to be since the politics section was closed down.

Nicer, but more boring. I liked interesting, even at the expense of a touch of nastiness.
