For the guitarists on RTTL, I listed Pink Moon by Nick Drake and am slowly learning some of his work. His odd tunings are a joy to use, CGCFCE known as Nick's tuning in particular, plus many others; however Parasite is challenging my finger picking ability. Any tips on how to play this would be much appreciated. Practice, practice, practice is a given.

It's impossible to give just one all time favourite album (for me, anyway) so here's a list in no particular order of merit:

Little Feat - Feats don't fail me now
Jeff Beck - Blow by blow
Alabama 3 - Exile on Cold Harbour Lane
Steely Dan - Countdown to Ecstacy
The Cramps - A date with Elvis
Rolling Stones - Any album released between 1968 and 1972
Radiohead - The Bends
Talking Heads - Stop making sense
Ian Dury - New boots and panties

There are probably 10 others I could list, and on a different day the selection would be different, but...

T'Pau - Bridge of Spies

It stands out because of the complete originality.
01-Heart and Soul
02-I Will Be With You
03-China in Your Hand
04-Friends Like These
05-Sex Talk

06-Bridge of Spies
07-Monkey House
08-Valentine
09-Thank You For Goodbye
10-You Give Up
11-China in Your Hand-Reprise

Every track a musical adventure that is incomparable to any other pop song I can think of. Anyone who recognises these tracks will instantly recall the melodic tags for each one. Carol Decker's all too fragile voice attacks the songs and wows the listener.
That group T'Pau, they're from Yorkshire tha knows :obscene-birdiedoublered:

Oh yes. Bought the vinyl on spec many years ago in Newcastle, knew nothing about them.

Two degrees in bebop, a PhD in swing, he's a master of rhythm, he's a rock n' roll king, yeah.

(I bought everything, just wish I'd seen 'em live, with Lowell G).

It's not my favourite album - I've no idea what is - but I'll chuck this in. 'Only' a hit single compo but I'll argue there's not a bad tune on it:

I read an interview with Hall and Oates, they just wrote songs, the record company decided which went on which album and even which songs were going to be released as singles in each territory, they gave no input at all, apparently.

I saw them four times (if memory serves) - first time in 1975 on the Warner Bros Music Show with such diverse bedfellows as Montrose, Doobie Brothers, Bonarroo and Tower of Power. They even had a 59p vinyl 12" sampler of all the acts. That was the year that LF blew the Doobies off stage at the Rainbow. I saw them at Manchester where they headlined; I remember the support (Montrose) as being painfully loud.

In 1976 I saw them twice - in May along with the Who, Sensational Alex Harvey Band, the Outlaws and Chapman Whitney Streetwalkers at Charlton Athletic Football Ground - all for £4! Then a month later they played their own headlining show at Birmingham Odeon, and this for me was the best show of theirs I ever saw. They played no less than 6 encores as the crowd just wouldn't let them go. I remember Lowell scratching his head and saying 'you people are crazy'. Memories... One of the 3 best gigs I've ever been to.

I also saw them on the 1977 tour they did with Tower of Power as the brass section at Manchester. This should have been the best of the lot, but it was clear that things in the band weren't totally harmonious (understatement of the year) and they played a fair number of songs off their most recent (and weakest) album, Time loves a hero. This was the tour that was recorded for the live 'Waiting for Columbus' album. It was still a fine gig, but nowhere near as good as the Birmingham one. But then the Brum gig set the bar almost impossibly high.

That was the last time that LF toured the UK (at least, that I know of) and for me it was the end of an era, as Punk/New Wave was just around the corner and everything would be upended. But Little Feat were something seriously special and Lowell George could play slide guitar and sing like an angel, albeit a chubby, gravelly-voiced one...

Just a thought - have you ever heard the bootleg 'Electrif Lycanthrope' album?

Yup. Had it on cassette, I think you pointed me at an archive version on-line recently.

I stopped at 'Down on the Farm'. Know what you mean about 'Time Loves a Hero', it was a bit 'slick' - but I liked it anyway.

(My name on another forum was 'Gunboat Willy' which is one for the afficionados :D - Nobody ever commented on where I got the name from).

I think I'll have to add Keith Jarrett's Cologne concert as one of my hardy perennials as I've played it as much as anything else and enjoy it v much every time. The story of how it got to be made is interesting too.
