To celebrate the successful take-over of Virgin Money, Nationwide are handing out cash again. £50 each on a joint savings account.

Re: Insignificant Things That Make You Happy.
Genuine kindness.
There are often beggars outside supermarkets but they're organised and it's a scam.
I tied Elvis outside the supermarkets a few feet from a lady beggar.
When I came out, she'd poured some water into a small bowl for Elvis to drink.
She may be a con artist but I couldn't ignore this genuine act of kindness
I did give her a little contribution.

Re: Insignificant Things That Make You Happy.
I feel like Charles Atlas. I've always kept myself fit, but when I restarted doing Euro trackdays, I knew I had to push my fitness and strength to a much higher level.
Before each event I'd get on the weights in the garage and push my limits.
I kept a spreadsheet of all my reps on each exercise of 10.
All with 10 kilos dumbells.
When I was ill before Xmas I lost 10 kilos, mainly from arms and legs as muscle wastage. I looked dreadful with skin hanging loose. I had lost all mobility for 7 weeks.
Around NYE they found the problem and put me on the right drugs which handled the pain and gave me some mobility back.
I starter walking the dog about half mile a day. Now averaging 6 mile a day
After a while I went in the garage to try the weights to see where I was.
I just about managed 4 kilos on some and 6 kilos on 2.
I knew I had to get up to 10 kilos if I wanted to do another trackday
That was the incentive. I've pushed hard through the pain and just now I've smashed records on 3 of the exercises and within 10 - 15% on all the others.
I'm back on 10 kilos on them all and it all feels so easy.
Within 2 weeks I'll be strongest I've been in last 3 years.
I'm amazed as I read dread stories of muscles not being able to fully rebuild.
Hopefully they'll be fixing the hernia in my neck soon which will fix the nerve pain in wrist then I'll be booking a few events in Europe in Autumn.
My cousin who died a few days ago gave me the strength and will to fight it all
Thanks David.

My wife is clearing out the kitchen cupboards and just asked if i'd like some xmas pudding and custard.
I wasnt expecting to be asked that today, but being a helpful sort of chap and keen to help her with her chores, I did have some and it was very nice too!

I really struggle to do consistent boiled eggs that I like!! I know it depends on the age/freshness of the egg etc, but you don't know that before you start cooking the bastard things
Poached or fried in butter for the win

Started using a small independant shop for fruit and veg and a few other things. All their stuff is laid out in big boxes and when you buy stuff they package it in brown paper bags. Theres something very nostalgic about paper bags that I like?

Re: Insignificant Things That Make You Happy.
A dose of karma in action.
I live in quite a hilly town and on one of the higher sections there has always been a right of way taking about half a mile off the walk from the houses to the town centre shops. Quite a few elderly folk use the shortcut to drag their shopping and old bones back up the hill.
A couple of years ago a new resident bought a house beside the right of way and decided she didn't like folk walking by her home,so she put up locked iron gates and the shortcut has been lost. Fuck the elderly, they can walk the extra for all she cared.
Recently the house beside her has erected a fence across the lane outside their dwelling,so now she can't go down the shortcut either. She's currently whining like an EV and sadly no one is listening.

If it's a right if way it should be relatively easy to get it opened again. I think there are penalties for blocking them too.Skub wrote: Thu Mar 27, 2025 10:29 am A dose of karma in action.

I understood if a right of way is inactive for a few years, then it's lost? Dunno if that's true.Count Steer wrote: Thu Mar 27, 2025 11:45 am If it's a right if way it should be relatively easy to get it opened again. I think there are penalties for blocking them too.![]()

Re: Insignificant Things That Make You Happy.
Very difficult to do and you have to apply to close it and, iirc, 'prove' it hasn't been used. It's a very tough process to extinguish one. If they blocked it before going through the process they should be taken to task. If the old folk have been using it over the last 20 years (I think) the miserable sods haven't got a leg to stand on.Skub wrote: Thu Mar 27, 2025 11:48 amI understood if a right of way is inactive for a few years, then it's lost? It's not lost if it's recorded on the Definitive Map. Speak to your Highways department or advise the Ramblers Association whose only reason to exist is to bug the shit out of PROW officersSkub wrote: Thu Mar 27, 2025 11:48 amI understood if a right of way is inactive for a few years, then it's lost?
