Would you have an electric car if you had the money for a new car and were in the market for one?

The lights are what makes it a Twingo though.

It didn't actually go down to the rumored 3.49p, it's 5.2p.KungFooBob wrote: Wed Mar 25, 2026 8:03 am So leccy bills are going down in April.
The government are dropping the Energy Company Obligation Scheme and some other stuff.
This means a lower price per kWh.
I'm reading that my Octopus Intelligent Go cheap rates is dropping from 7p to 3.49p.
My car this month has averaged 3.3 m/kWh.
So to get 100 miles it would use 30kwh.
Add 10% for charging losses, etc...
So that 100 miles in April will cost me £1.16
(If I wasn't charging for free at work).
So that 100 miles will now set me back £1.72.

"WLTP driving range of 163 miles" Useless. Imagine what that's going to be in winter.KungFooBob wrote: Tue Mar 31, 2026 7:12 pm I think the NDA (or whatever you call it) has been lifted on the Renault Twingo reviews as a loads have hit the tinternest over the last 24 hours.
They're all absolutely gushing.
I like how they've made it look a bit like the original Twingo (Renault are the masters at this with their recent R5 and R4 EVs)

It's plenty for a city / town car, more than enough for an average commute and to do the weekly shop in.Taipan wrote: Wed Apr 01, 2026 9:55 am "WLTP driving range of 163 miles" Useless. but a town car is exactly what it is.
my wife does 14 miles a day to and from work, this car is good for a fortnight worth of commuting.

It's got LFP batteries too, so you don't need to pay any attention to that 80% bollocks and can charge it to 100% every day.

IIRC, the first Nissan Leaf had about 105 miles range when new.MrLongbeard wrote: Wed Apr 01, 2026 10:02 amIt's plenty for a city / town car, more than enough for an average commute and to do the weekly shop in.Taipan wrote: Wed Apr 01, 2026 9:55 am "WLTP driving range of 163 miles" Useless. Shows how things have developed that 163 miles is considered "useless"

Range (and charge time) has been the biggest criticism and stumbling block for EV sales. In winter I bet that 163 is going to be more like 100-130, maybe worse if you have the heating on etc. This doesn't deserve a fanfare.

I've done two 'long' round trips this week: 42 & 46 miles. For an 'about town' car, 100-130 would be fineTaipan wrote: Wed Apr 01, 2026 11:31 am Range (and charge time) has been the biggest criticism and stumbling block for EV sales. And I've also recently done a five day 2,000 km trip in a petrol Twingo

I said it would be fine as a town car, but its hardly an innovative step forward for EVs and it'll fuel the critics.Horse wrote: Wed Apr 01, 2026 12:08 pmI've done two 'long' round trips this week: 42 & 46 miles. This really is the same as complaining that your NC is shit because there's no way that it could keep up in a track day fast group full of 170bhp superbikes.Taipan wrote: Wed Apr 01, 2026 11:31 am Range (and charge time) has been the biggest criticism and stumbling block for EV sales. Of course it can't, it's not built for that purpose, nor does the Renault cost north of £60k.

According to Auto express: "'Significantly under’ £20,000"Taff wrote: Wed Apr 01, 2026 12:23 pmThis really is the same as complaining that your NC is shit because there's no way that it could keep up in a track day fast group full of 170bhp superbikes.Taipan wrote: Wed Apr 01, 2026 11:31 am Range (and charge time) has been the biggest criticism and stumbling block for EV sales. I think we’ll see more of this. I don’t like the Twingo, but applaud their entry point.

There's a ratio of alcohol to lap times. A couple of oz of rum will take 2 or 3 seconds off your lap times on a proper race track... but is frowned upon. (the booze lessens your apprehension, so you go faster)
Our best result at Moped Mayhem in the 80's was a 2nd place.. after we had 6 crashes & two of us were stretchered off the track on consecutive laps.. & our entire team was hammered.

Re: Would you have an electric car if you had the money for a new car and were in the market for one?
Another great article from Harry. Pretty much what my mate is the trade is saying too. Net zero is ridiculous and this govt adding VED to EVs has left everyone feeling mugged off, especially when you can buy an ICE with less VED.
Don't get me wrong, I'm (mostly) an EV convert, but Govt(s) are hindering their success. As Harry said, Tesla got it right. BMW are getting it right, Chinese offerings will get it right, everyone else, less so and worse yet, they are withdrawing because of ridiculous Govt policies and deadlines. Govt would be better subsidising home chargers and building up a street charging network and of course returning VED to £0.

The VED on my Livewire One has arrived. £26.
Yet my neighbours 15 year old diesel Polo is only £10
