Would you have an electric car if you had the money for a new car and were in the market for one?

Do a bit of Googling to find out how well hidden some of these catches are. IIRC, they're in different places in different vehicles.v8-powered wrote: Mon Apr 13, 2026 7:16 pmAre people that stupid???Taipan wrote: Mon Apr 13, 2026 5:35 pmGet a pack of these ordered as it'll do yer brain in when people keep asking how to open the door.![]()

Then imagine being in a burning car you've never been in before, at night.
Even bland can be a type of character

Re: Would you have an electric car if you had the money for a new car and were in the market for one?
Its a stupid design (as are the outer door handles) as it's a small black press button on a black background. People simply cant see them, especially at night and of course they are quite different from other cars. People look for a handle to pull rather than a button to press.v8-powered wrote: Mon Apr 13, 2026 7:16 pmAre people that stupid???Taipan wrote: Mon Apr 13, 2026 5:35 pmGet a pack of these ordered as it'll do yer brain in when people keep asking how to open the door.![]()

Re: Would you have an electric car if you had the money for a new car and were in the market for one?
I had to work it out and at first I pressed the wrong one, which is the emergency release and I got a warning saying this doesn't drop the window and could cause damage, so I had to look again to see which was the actual button I'm supposed to use to open the door.
I'm still sold on the EV thing though, they're so practical and easy to use, I'm not sure I'd buy an ICE car for normal daily A to B driving anymore and to be totally honest if there was something like a Porsche Cayman EV that was 1000kg and as fast as my Tesla then that would probably make the perfect sports car too, there is definitely a character thing about the petrol engine in my GT3RS for example and I don't plan to get rid of them, but I think I could live without an internal combustion engine.

I'd agree. I've been a guest in 2 Teslas now - I still can't be sure where the door button is. Doesn't help that the window button is in a position where you'd think a door handle would be on any other car, AND is exactly the same button in look and feel as the door button.Taipan wrote: Mon Apr 13, 2026 9:36 pmIts a stupid design (as are the outer door handles) as it's a small black press button on a black background. Lol, looks like I'll have to give my occasional passenger a pre-flight briefing before each trip then

You're not going to get anything that light with a half decent battery, until solidstate batteries become a thing.IccyV2 wrote: Tue Apr 14, 2026 5:59 am if there was something like a Porsche Cayman EV that was 1000kg and as fast as my Tesla then that would probably make the perfect sports car too
The closest you're going to get is the MG Cyberster, but the fast one is 1985kg (and the slightly slower one is only 100k lighter cos it's got no front motor).
Silly name, but it looks great and it's got scissors doors!
Re: Would you have an electric car if you had the money for a new car and were in the market for one?
I know, that's why I made a point of the weight, the Tesla is quick but you can feel the weight, it's like the new Porsche GTS, it's hybrid and almost 600bhp but again you can feel the weight. I'm having a 911 race car built that will be about 1000kg and 350bhp(ish) and that will be lively, so once they get the batteries sorted and they can put an EV with 600bhp on the road at 1000kg it will be fun.KungFooBob wrote: Tue Apr 14, 2026 7:45 amYou're not going to get anything that light with a half decent battery, until solidstate batteries become a thing.IccyV2 wrote: Tue Apr 14, 2026 5:59 am if there was something like a Porsche Cayman EV that was 1000kg and as fast as my Tesla then that would probably make the perfect sports car too

I want one of those. A bit less so now though, as the guys at RevComps said its not very suitable for tall people as the screen height is very low.KungFooBob wrote: Tue Apr 14, 2026 7:45 amYou're not going to get anything that light with a half decent battery, until solidstate batteries become a thing.IccyV2 wrote: Tue Apr 14, 2026 5:59 am if there was something like a Porsche Cayman EV that was 1000kg and as fast as my Tesla then that would probably make the perfect sports car too

Re: Would you have an electric car if you had the money for a new car and were in the market for one?
It's not going to be much fun on the road. Legal speeds will feel like walking pace and "fun" speeds will get you so many points on your licence that either you won't want to do those speeds any more or you won't be able to. The most fun cars I've owned were a Suzuki Cappuccino (63 bhp) and a MG Midget (56 bhp). Both were fast enough to have fun without risking a driving ban.IccyV2 wrote: Tue Apr 14, 2026 10:04 am...

The thing with a light and zippy car is that you can have fun at legals speeds, if 0-60 is about 2 seconds then it's enough of a thrill that you don't need to be doing triple figures.Saga Lout wrote: Tue Apr 14, 2026 11:03 amIt's not going to be much fun on the road. Once you've told/shown people that normally covers it, but the stickers will help at night. Unless its old people. They just wont get it. Ever.v8-powered wrote: Tue Apr 14, 2026 7:11 am Lol, looks like I'll have to give my occasional passenger a pre-flight briefing before each trip then

Drove past a field full of identical brand new cars yesterday, was too far away to see what they were. Later I was closer & got to ID them:
10 acres of E Jags just dumped in the desert.

The I-Pace is subject to a massive recall at the moment due to dodgy LG battery packs. Owners have been advised to park outside, probably related in some way.ZRX61 wrote: Wed Apr 15, 2026 4:10 pm Drove past a field full of identical brand new cars yesterday, was too far away to see what they were. That'll be them then. Must have been damn near 1000 of them, maybe more.KungFooBob wrote: Wed Apr 15, 2026 4:18 pm The I-Pace is subject to a massive recall at the moment due to dodgy LG battery packs. Owners have been advised to park outside, probably related in some way.

Looks like more and more people will have an electric car and rising petrol prices aren't quite the motivator that explains it all.
