Amidst the horrors of Nazi occupation, a single photograph captured an astonishing moment of human defiance that would echo through history. The image shows Georges Blind, a French Resistance fighter, standing before a German firing squad, not with fear or despair, but with a calm, almost serene smile. This powerful photograph, taken in October 1944, reveals a staged mock execution, a psychological weapon used by the Gestapo to break his spirit and force him to betray his comrades. But Georges, a railway worker from Belfort, refused to be broken.

His steadfast silence in the face of death's illusion proved his unwavering commitment to the cause. The Germans, unable to extract any information, soon deported him. His journey of suffering, however, was far from over. Georges was sent to the Blechhammer concentration camp, a subcamp of Auschwitz. Tragically, he would not survive long. He died sometime in late November 1944, just weeks after the iconic photograph was taken. His smile in the face of tyranny became a powerful symbol of courage and resistance, a testament to the indomitable human spirit that even the most brutal regimes could not extinguish.

I'm aware that it can be easy for the uninitiated to fly a Union Jack upside-down, but when I saw this effort at my local trading estate that had been adorned with flags, as is the fashion currently, I did have to laugh. Sorry for the poor quality photo, but I had to rush to take it.

Look closely and you can see that even with the word 'ENGLAND' to help him out, this goon actually managed to fly his cross of St. George upside-down.

Maybe he's in distress and has no radio or something.

Girona, Placa de la Independecia. A lovely little city.

Fun fact - the street in the background is where the 'distracted boyfriend' meme photo was taken.

I wish, I did the walk of insecticide around the front of the house last night with the blowtorch & got about 50 of the buggers.

The Mantii hang out on the humming bird feeders & kill them, they're vicious little fuckers.

It's now climbed to the top of the screen on my bedroom window & is basking in the cool breeze from the swamp cooler.

I couldn't get a picture cause I was driving alone, but someone has tied loads of union flags to a footbridge over the M1...every single one of which is upside down

I know exactly what they've done, they've tied all the flags to the railings and got the angles just so for the motorists below, then checked they're all the right way up...then completely failed to realise that the people on the motorway are viewing the flags from the other side. :obscene-birdiedoublered:

TBF up until a few years ago i'd never heard of a right way up for the union flag. Why would I. Not like i own one or been in the military and they certainly never mentioned it at school. I suspect its the same for a lot of people?

Nope, I've known about it for years, why wouldn't you know how to hang your countries own flag even if you've never actually done it :?

I first knew it from Boy Scouts and they definitely mentioned it at school - but then again more than one of my teacher's was ex Royal Navy

In this example of the M1 though, they were all upside down and quite neatly arranged. I bet they knew, they just didn't account for the mirroring effect of looking from the other side.

Oi! Aircraft enthusiasts! What're these?

They did three circuits. The group of four headed back North a bit after.

I'm guessing two Spitfires and Hurricane in the group. But the others?

I know there's an event at Duxford, but we're miles from there (West Berkshire).

Big one is a B17, the one at the back of the foursome is a P51 Mustang and the other two little ones are Spitfires. Not sure what the first one is.

Is it Duxford airshow this weekend?

They could be doing a flyby somewhere else, they'll often do that as a mini airshow for small events since they're in the sky anyway, IYSWIM.

Edit: Having just googled what's flying at Duxford this weekend I suspect the one in the lead is a Blenheim.

Why would I? Its not part of the curriculum and i've had no contact with flags, or putting them up on flag poles etc. Why would I come into contact with the info on it?
