TBH apart from the Akra, they're all as 'meh' as eachother. The standard MT09 can suits the bike really well in shape and sizing.

I dislike the akra raceline ones as they stick out at an odd angle and not that keen on the Ti ones either, but I could put up with the looks I suppose. Unfortunately everything I've read says they are very loud? Crazy prices too. Second hand they go for over £600! The stubby black widow looks okay as I saw an gen1 with one on yesterday. Also the M4 look nice but you have to cut the original system down.

As you rightly say, the best looking one is the Yamaha one, but I have to hear this sing!! I suspect i'll be like you were with the XSR, I'll keep changing them over!

From riding Weeksy's with I think the MT09 system on when I rode it I thought it sounded great as standard. But I know you are a someone who appreciates some sound (AKA an Essex boy) but doubt it's worth the wedge of an Akro.

I think the GSX is geared pretty low due to the type of bike, a ZX9 would have a fair bit more top end speed, but this is a good thing on a naked bike. Rolling on with the GSX my brother on his Z750 is having to pretty much red line it to get the same drive, it's ace on 2nd/3rd gear corner exits it just absolutely fucks off but still feels fun below 85-90.

Deffo like to hear a bike. As i kid i grew up watching pre 65 scrambles and MX and touch of The Transatlantics Brands Hatch too. So I only really knew loud bikes! I always wear ear plugs so I don't really hear the OEM system but I can tell it s a bit of a growl to it as opposed to the washing machine whine some bikes have. I got a bit carried away yesterday and put an offer in on a s/hand akra, but it was rejected and then it sold. I'm quite relieved about that now!

I prefer mid sized engine bikes as I can thrash them a bit and get a full riding experience, which I never get on a big engined bike as its gets too fast, too quick, for this wimp! It was the only reservation I had about buying the MT09, but I'm very glad I went ahead now!

These triples are awesome right! Having the daddy 955i triple means I have authority on just what they are like on the road. Pity mine needs a fair bit of work at the moment! Hope you get that exhaust sorted soon and can actually hear it sing properly.

As to seats, throw on a sheepskin, bar risers and be an Easy Rider Rebel! Oh yes, TASSLES and chaps!

I did notice I a starting to get numb fingers on the throttle hand. Dunno why I get this on almost every bike I've had? I think it might be because I ride with my fingers on the brake lever which is probably transmitting vibes?

Anyway, bought a 20mm Black Widow which will be here tomorrow and I'll hopefully fit it friday or over the weekend. It may stay on, or come off but then go back on...

Well, it looks like the death knell has been sounded! It was time to return the bike, or so I thought! I thought the engine had a whine to it and was even starting to enjoy the sound, but then I realised the whine would change pitch with throttle load. That's the gearbox!

When I started looking at these I googled faults and remembered something about a whine from the gearbox, so I googled it again. It looks like they all do that Sir! Plenty written about this and no obvious threads of gears exiting stage left. I asked on a MT forum and everyone aid they do do that and it is nothing to worry about. Phew!! She stays and the black widow exhausts is awaiting pick up, so the sodding about with a perfectly good bike for no real reason plans are to go ahead!

Isn't that also potentially chain tension too?

WFH today so was able to pick the exhaust up. Its a 2nd hand system but supposedly in VGC with only a few marks. Well everything in there and looking clean and as it should do. It comes with new gaskets and even a spring puller which is handy, but I don't have any assembly paste. D'oh! So it won't be sneakily put on today on the firms time.

In the past with systems they've been so tight fitting I've just used antiseize as a sealant, but I remember my lextek came with a specific paste which was almost like a caulk? WHat stuff do you guys use as assembly paste?

Copper grease or high temp stuff. Either has always worked for me.

Well i just found the sealing paste stuff that came with my Lextek system and I also have copperslip as well! Looking at the bike it looks straightforward enough to do, but sometimes the simple jobs turn out to be the worst ones! I need the bike for tomorrow, so cant afford any hiccups, but can I wait until Friday for my brap brap fix!

Get on with it... if you break it today that's no worse than any other day.... get the spanners on it now.

Actually it is. I have to be in work tomorrow and if I did mess anything up I'd be in trouble as I cant do the walk from the stations at each end now. But we have a garden party Saturday, so that's that out and Sunday I'll be too hungover lol! So maybe I will get on with it later. I'll check out some YT vids on fitting a BW exhaust...

Weeksy has changed exhaust systems on MT09 versions about 300 times, I'm sure he can help if needed!

I had my XSR900 one off about a dozen times... it's a 12 minute job


There's literally 1 mount point....that's it... under the engine is a bracket point... it could be 1 or 2 bolts depending on the bracketry.

Radiator stays where it is, just a very very easy swap.

Yes I can see it literally looks a ten minute job assuming everything comes off okay and isn't stuck, which at 6k miles it shouldn't be. I thought I read somewhere that aligning up the collector on the BW system can be tricky as it can hit the sump? Not that phases me, its just I'm supposed to be working and keep getting pestered for stuff.

I put it on! A bit fiddly lining it up and I take what whoever said about it only being a mm or 2 away from the sump! Anyway, it's loud. Effin loud! But now its all together, it can drop on and off as easy as the OEM system which is a quick job. So I can swap them out as I fancy, or plod dictates!
