In the mid-1700s, Benjamin Franklin argued that the English and other northern Europeans, such as Germans and Scandinavians, were white, while southern and eastern Europeans often were not.

He grouped Spaniards, Italians, French, Russians, Swedes, and even most Germans as not fully white, and contrasted them with the English, whom he viewed as fair skinned and ideal settlers. In his view, climate and ancestry determined color and character, and he feared that too many non English Europeans would change the nature of the colonies.

Toward the end of his life his views shifted significantly, though not completely by modern standards. By the 1780s Franklin opposed slavery and became president of the Pennsylvania Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery in 1787. He supported education for Black Americans and argued that differences between peoples were largely the result of environment education and social conditions rather than innate inferiority.

In his final writings, he openly criticized slavery and mocked pro slavery arguments through satire. Even so, he never fully abandoned the hierarchical assumptions of his era and still framed equality in terms of assimilation into European norms. Overall, Franklin began with exclusionary racial views and ended his life as a committed abolitionist with a more humane, though still limited, understanding of race.

I was going to make a joke about Scotland and Wales and fair skin and lack of sunshine...

I've got very celtic heritage (Scottish and Irish). I've always described my ability to sunbathe as "my skin thinks I'm ginger, so I don't" - it's interesting trying to say that in French in a way that they understand (my vocab is improving )

Ballylumford Dolmen, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. Known locally as the "Druid's Altar", it is thought to be 4000 years old, or the remains of an even earlier passage grave. Historical artefacts have been recovered from under the dolmen by archaeologists and it appears to have stood over an ancient burial chamber. Today, the Dolmen sits in the front garden of a house, making it the only prehistoric burial chamber with its own postal address.
