I've rescued a Maligator who spent most of his life in a cage, so he's a bit highly strung, to put it mildly. So I'm lying in bed this morning, peacefully sleeping, dogs all curled up in the kitchen, place is as quiet as a tomb.

And the sodding electric meter starts wailing.

Boom.

Maligator goes nuts, which sets off the other 3 maniacs, I run down to the kitchen to find the Mali on the worktop roaring his head off and three Rottweilers ready to kill dead things, Ziva runs past me, jumps the stair gate at the bottom of the stairs, charges upstairs, jumps the gate at the top and crashes into the bedroom to protect the wife, who's not pleased at 100lb of dog landing on her. Misty gets into the living room and ends up in the bay window barking like something off game of thrones, Bella is trying to get at the meter under the stairs and I'm standing in my boxers trying to get the bloody Mali off the worktop before the kitchen gets trashed.

So much for my bank holiday lie in.

I had to look up 'Maligator'. I imagined a cross between an alligator and Maleficent.

So I was right.

My mate in Holland has a Belgian Malinois. His was taught to be a family pet and that is exactly what it is. Cracking dog but most of his trouble is some of the police and customs officers use them also so folk tend to think they are vicious snarling beasts. Mate called his Pooch and its will slobber you to death with love.

Just had an eye test and ordered new specs.

I have a complex prescription apparently and get the test for free, plus an extra £15 off, but the cost was nearly £350!

For a pair of glasses and one of sunnies.

Mrs D gets NHS complex prescription help too. Always makes me laugh.

I have 3 Rotts as well. When you walk them, people cross the street. Three of the biggest soft idiots I've ever met.

The Mali is a complete pillock. He was caught raiding the bin tonight......

I don't think you need to have children to know that setting a bad example is bad (mmmkay)

My favourite mugs for drinking tea are a couple of bone china Wedgewood ones, made in England. Had 'em for quite a long time and used to have 4, now down to 2.

(Not posh or owt, tea gets made with a teabag in 'em and stains get cleaned up with Steradent ).

Decided to buy a couple more. Went at the price but ordered them anyway. Very nice, lovely packaging and the tea drinking experience is as good as ever.

Buried in the small print on the boxes - made in Indonesia. (Wedgewood - and Waterford Crystal - and Royal Doulton are now owned by the scissors people, Fiskars).

So much for our fine pottery industry.

Buying 2nd hand cars!

Got myself a new runaround as youngest has pinched my DS3.

Driving to station on Tuesday and headlamp warning came on - "easy, thought I". New HID lamp ordered and fitted today - still playing up so Google'd and HID ballast now likely the culprit so ordered one, fingers crossed. Whilst there I noted that headlamps were pointing really low - seller mentioned that he had replaced both rear springs shortly before I purchased, immediate thought is 'bet he snapped the height sensor on the back axle changing the springs' - yep, the bell end had! Temp bodge with a zip-tye, new sensor ordered.

That's why I prefer buying new cars!

There is some pleasing irony here though I reckon.

Josiah Wedgwood started his eponymous company to mass produce pottery at low cost using automated processes, thus breaking the Chinese monopoly on errr.....China.....by undercutting their artisan produce fabricated by highly skilled labour.

Now the boot's on the other foot...

Yep, some friends in Stoke bought us a gift box of milk jug and cups from Spode.

I got told years ago that everyone from Stoke (The Potteries) turns the cups upside down in restaurants to check where they were made and they're very picky about that sort of thing, so when we opened this gift set I told my wife this story and then turned the cup over at the same time as telling her that they would say Made in Stoke on Trent, because they're from Stoke and they'd be snobby about it - and there it was printed underneath "Made in China".

LOL. I do that thing with pottery and was in a restaurant and thought 'Ooh. Nice crockery' and flipped a plate over. Chap on the next table leans over and says 'Are you from Stoke by any chance?' I explained that I wasn't but my father was.

One of wife's colleagues was 'billeted' with Wedgewood as a consultant and may have been instrumental in off-shoring some production to Indonesia. They were v keen on maintaining quality. Given the labour and energy intensity of making hand decorated pots the drift away from these shores was inevitable I guess and Fiskars is a decent outfit - better than the asset stripping private equity fate that beckoned.

(All it says under my new mugs is 'Wedgewood England 1759' - you have to search the packaging to find 'Made in Indonesia'. The old ones (1996 apparently) proudly state 'Made in England' underneath. I confess, I'd been scanning the charity shops to see if I could find some s/h 'right size' bone china mugs but gave up and bought 2).

I do the same with flatware and I've no connection to SoT at all.

My preferred mug, bone china too, is made by Mclaggan Smith in Scotland. It has the periodic table on it.
