They have just lifted the south east water hosepipe ban ( two days ago) and it's been raining so much they have flood warnings. You could not write it any better if you were trying to do irony.

They only lifted it two days after they were ridiculed in the press for saying it was still in place because groundwater reservoirs take longer to fill up than surface ones.petrolpete wrote: Sun Feb 08, 2026 11:35 pm They have just lifted the south east water hosepipe ban ( two days ago) and it's been raining so much they have flood warnings. If they mean aquifers when they say 'groundwater' then it'd be true - and 75-80% of SE water supply is from aquifers apparently. (Which is something of a surprise to me but appears to be a common source in chalky areas).Mussels wrote: Mon Feb 09, 2026 11:12 pmThey only lifted it two days after they were ridiculed in the press for saying it was still in place because groundwater reservoirs take longer to fill up than surface ones.petrolpete wrote: Sun Feb 08, 2026 11:35 pm They have just lifted the south east water hosepipe ban ( two days ago) and it's been raining so much they have flood warnings. I would find if hard to believe the aquifers are not filled by now. Yup, the SE chalk acquifers generally recharge over the 6 months from October to March (depends on the depletion rates too, obvs). I guess they need them brim full to get through the 'dry seasons'.Mr Moofo wrote: Mon Feb 16, 2026 8:15 amI would find if hard to believe the aquifers are not filled by now. OTOH, the Libyan ones took thousands of years to fill and they'll empty them in a lifetime-ish. Then things'll get interesting in Tripoli!

Re: In todays light hearted look at the (non-political) news
South West Water are doing their best to emulate Libya. Cornwalls biggest and bestest resevoir is on the top of bodmin moor fed by the St Neot River. In winter spate you could step across this, in summer you can walk along the bed of it and not get wet feet. Then they wonder why after a dry spell it takes ages to refill.Count Steer wrote: Tue Feb 10, 2026 7:36 am

Local rag today.
" Cornwall's largest reservoir remains well below capacity despite relentless storms and weeks of constant rain."
