Oil,oil, oil. I thought it was me.

Before I set off on my little journey, I changed the oil with Rock 10 40
I changed that to Castrol Power1 10 40. I was noticing that the up gear changes were a little 'notchy' especially into top. I was just giving it a little blip and just adapted as you do. Power 1 again and then changed to Penrite semi 10 40. Then yesterday another change, this time to Motul 5100 10 40. . Out today and straight away noticed smoother gear changes. I can only assume that it is the oil that has made the difference.
I've always thought that oil was oil if it was a named product. Anyone had similar experience ?
Still on the subject of oil
Since I bought the bike, I have never liked the front end. The previous owner had messed with the rear by jacking it up. Something that was easily rectified by putting the standard dog bones back in. My regret was not having the time to pull out the forks for a look see before it was crated up and shipped out.
I had the time recently whilst staying at my lads place to check out what if anything had been done. My assumption was that thicker oil, spacers or both had been fitted. I planned to just put the standard weight oil in. Draining the oil and straight away noticed the different colours. Mmm ? No spacers. Looked at the fork seals and no sign that either have been changed, and this was a low mileage bike so I wouldn't expect that. Having the oil in 2 containers I performed my less than scientific oil thickness test. One is definitely a heavier weight. Why would anyone do that ?
Anyway. Noticibly better. Why do people fuck about with something when they don't understand and just make things worse ?

I think we all may have been guilty of this at one time or another....

That's me thoughout my whole life,it's how we learn and even the slowest person understands more eventually. :D

Motul seems to be good stuff generally. I always used to run my bikes on Silkolene Comp4 semi. The gear change on the Zed was definitely not made by Suzuki and needs a positive shift if you are not wanting to end up between gears. It was like this from new. I did several things in an effort to improve this by bushing the gear lever to remove play and fitting a support bracket under the gear shaft. The biggest difference came when I changed oil to Motul.

On the triples, woe betide you if you use the wrong grade/type of oil for the gearbox, much clutch aggro will surely follow.

Absolutely. How on earth does humanity advance if they don't try new stuff?

Having said that, there is a point when you need to know when to leave well enough alone. The tricky part is identifying that point...

I find that when things start snapping it's time to put the tools down.

Re: oil differences.
My Yamaha gearbox doesn't like motul FS.
Makes it notchy and unpleasant.
Favourite oil is Super U FS 10/50, and only €33 for 6l, which is 2 oil changes for me!

I used nothing but Whale Oil, preferably 10/40 Narwhal.

Dunno. My GSXS had Silkolene semi synth from the dealer, I used Castrol power 1 fully synth when I did the oil change in Aug. Noticed no difference to the gear change which is buttery smooth on both oils but I think that's a Suzuki thing.

That point was after our second last modification.
