There's instructions here on how to install Linux Mint from a USB stick.

Hope this is some use to you.

I did download mint 20 last night what was a zip rather than iso. Do i just un zip that to a fat32 formatted pen drive and boot from usb or need the iso and use something like Rufus to create a bootable pen drive?
It's been a while since I did it - but IIRC you need something like Rufus to write the ISO to the USB whether you're making a bootable USB or not - I'm not sure if you can just drag the ISO file onto the USB drive - you need to overwrite the USB's existing ISO (or something)

What model of Lappy was it?

There's a section on the cloud ready site to look up the model to find what BIOS/UEFI setting you need to make it work.
