The wife has an i-phone - I hate the thing but that is just me. The problem is that it cannot/will not send text messages. It receives texts ok.

I have done the following (not necessarily in this order).

Checked it is not in Airplane mode
Checked it has a mobile signal
Checked it has a wifi connection
Checked that SMS is turned on
Checked that MMS is turned on
Deleted the offending message threads, and tried again from scratch
Turned it off and on again.
Checked the OS is up to date.
Reset the network settings

Anyone with any other ideas?

Does it get on the tinternet when not on wifi?

Could be the APN settings.

Can she send messages to other iphone users, as that uses the same interface, but uses iMessage rather than SMS?

Don't know. She was trying to send a text to a phone, make unknown, so could be i-message or SMS. It will receive SMS from my Android, but will not reply.
Yes, she can get internet via mobile, mobile data is on.

Can't help, but are you giving them enough time to go, text messages from the wife on her Iphone can take hours to be received

Plenty of time, i-phone says 'cannot send'.

Call your service provider, they may need alter your settings at the network end.
