Prostate examination. 😲

A mate of mine turned 50 and got an invite to send a nice sample off in the post. He lives in a different area to me, we aren't as fortunate here. Apparently, the blood test isn't any good so you need a proper job.
Is it a region thing where some do and some don't. ? I'm going to give my doctor a ring, see what he says. Sorry, couldn't resist.

Pretty sure it's regional.
My BDad was diagnosed with bowel cancer because he was registered with a doctor near work. When speaking to friends in the village he lived in, the local practice didn't send out requests for samples, but the one by work did.
Very lucky out here, as soon as I hit 50 I got letters for three tests - the 2 girly ones and the bowel cancer one - and they will continue to come every couple or 3 years (different for each test). So far, only had to do simple tests so far - phew!!!

Poo in the post is for bowel cancer - and, I think, every over 60 gets them.
Prostate exam is generally after raise PSA in a blood test, then finger up the bum. And the 15 samples snipped out of said prostate if you are unlucky.
Different issue

Nut, but the whole thing was her idea so as my normal doctor is a 60 something big bloke i took her up on her offer.

50 in Scotland and every two years. I never got the offer last year so probably covid trumped that as well.

They take more than that now. At least the doctor who did my biopsy this morning did. He took about 30. Very uncomfortable/borderline painful. Not something I want to go through again.
I had the PSA blood test in mid December and everything moved pretty quickly from there. The PSA levels were up so my GP shoved his finger up my bum then I got a hospital appointment a couple of days before Christmas where another doctor shoved his finger up my bum. He said it felt normal but he wanted me to have a MRI scan. That showed an "anomaly" so I had the biopsies taken this morning. Now I just have to wait, 10 days or so, apparently.
One thing I know about prostate cancer though: Most men have prostate cancer when they die, but most of them die from something else because most prostate cancers are very slow to develop. (That's a lot of "mosts"

)
EDIT: That might be one of those "things that I know that just ain't so". I'm sure somebody will put me right if it is.

Sounds about right although it may be many rather than most men. It's also why sometimes things are best left alone and monitored as the cure can be worse than the problem, but, they now have a technique where they just insert little radioactive pellets that restrict or kill off the little hooligan cells. (An article on a famous local with prostate cancer was in the local news and it was quite informative, can't remember the fancy name they gave to the pellet treatment but it sounds by far the best option

).

The poo in the post saved my Wicked Step Mothers life.
She had had a few bowel issues and the QUACK local GP sent her for a bowl check which came back negative and told her it was IBS and "live" with it despite the unusual onset of symptoms, "she was far too young to have bowel cancer" (early 60's).
Poo test arrived 6 months later and she nearly binned it but my Dad told her to do it and posted it. Two weeks later she got a "we need to see you NOW" call from the local hospital followed by lots of tests, turns out she had bowel cancer but in the bit of the bowel men usually get it, the earlier inspection she had was only on the bit of the bowel women normally get problem in. VERY poor fault finding by the NHS. Consultant gave her the choice of we operate now and you'll probably die of old age or you can be dead inside a year. She had the op and four years later she is still with us.
Do the poo test if it turns up.
And if you think something wrong don't let the GP fob you off.

My PSA in December was normal. Finger up the arse was a bit sensitive, which has prompted further investigation.
I have the urologist end of March.
You can love for ages with prostate cancer- decades even. The risk is spread.
I’ve got a chronic symptom which is embarrassing but we’ll see.
Good luck, Saga.
