I'm very happy with my corded Bosch hedge trimmer , but I need an extended version for the wide and tall hedges . I'd prefer to get a pro or semi pro tool rather than a toy . I'm hoping some of our pro gardeners could give us a pointer . I'm looking at the DeWalt DCMPH 18V with 5 amp batteries. Recommendations please ? tia .

@Felix would be the man for that. I thought the pro boys still use stroker tools?

I have a couple of Stihl electric models and one AP200 lithium battery. The long reach hedge trimmer is tough and I run out of energy well before the battery does. Likewise the strimmer is robust and tackle most lighter brush. As with any cord strimmer replacing the nylon cord is quite fiddly but there is no need to change the head and there are plenty of youtube demonstrations of how to reload it. I wish I could afford the proper brush cutter but it is expensive and I can't justify it in my garden.

2T here. Battery wont last me the day and by the time i keep charging them i would be forever buying new ones. One gardener round here bought a battery mower what lasted a week before he got sick of charging it. No i buy them £200 2T like in @v8-powered link and get a good three years out of them. £69 buys me another engine allowing me to continue using all the accessories.

Just for balance, I'd suggest there's a reasonable difference between the requirements of a pro and casual user.

I bow down to any professional advice from the likes of Felix, but surely his main requirement is lasting a full day? Is that really a factor for the rest of us?

I have/had a petrol pole trimmer and couldn't manage more than 45 minutes before my body gave in. Now have a Makita electric one and it's way better... For me.

Just as powerful, obviously quieter, but main consideration is that it's maybe half the weight. Sure it runs out of juice after an hour, but so do I!

Totally agree. I may have a battery one if it was just for my garden. Makita have one for around £80 and takes the LXT batteries that all my power tools use. A 3A battery lasts allegedly 25 minutes continues what is plenty time for my garden but all my batteries are 5A so should get a bit longer if needed.
Old guy i started to do his lawn for last year swore by his EGO Power battery mower. This did his small front and rear garden three times before needing a charge but they are a stupid price. He also got the 2nd battery option. I can get three good petrol mowers for the same price.

Battery stuff for me too although the mowers are mains powered (I have a small one for the front and a bigger one for the back, saves lugging the bigger one up and down steps. I'm gradually reducing the grassed areas too).

Petrol engines thrive on use and, for me, a twice yearly hedge trim would necessitate more maintenance than makes sense - draining for winter etc. Plus I can swap the (Stihl) battery between strimmer, chain saw etc.

At various times I've had a petrol strimmer/brush cutter and a multi-tool garden thing that you could connect different things to the engine. Gave them away.

Your collected observations are not wrong ! When I said I wanted a pro or semi-pro tool , I really meant in terms of build quality and functionality . ( Sadly ) I do have lots of hedging and I never tackle it all in one hit . I totally get and appreciate Felix's observations . I'll almost certainly go battery powered and report back any exceptionally good or bad experiences . Thanks all .
