Anyway wouldn't have anything other than a latex mattress now.

About 25 years ago we bought a very expensive latex low allergy mattress. It was bloody horrible. They insulate and become like a thermonuclear device !

Modern memory foam mattresses will have some sort ventilation built-in.

We bought an Emma (expensive? Never buy one full price, they usually have discounts of some sort, ours was 35% or 40% off) 18 months ago, wouldn't want to go back to springs.

Have had a sprung mattress ex IKEA for about 8 years - which is great. Prior to that the late one got kicked for a foam IKEA one , which is still on out spare bed, and one of the most comfortable beds I have sleep on outside of plush Singapore hotels

That's goose down ££. Worth the extra over fibre. (Although, now it seems there's goose down and there's ethical goose down ie not live-plucked/force fed birds )

I had to buy an ergonomic pillow to fix my crooked neck. Take it everywhere now! It's one of those contoured memory foam jobbies.

Can't remember what make, but my pillow is pocket springs.

Really comfortable, never needs 'plumping up' after gradually crumpling.

Also, because it's hollow springs full of air, it doesn't act as an insulator in the same way that foam or fibre could.

Our Emma is a bit 'firm'.

We bought a 'hotel quality' (whatever that means) padded mattress topper.

It was a bitter pill spunking £150 on it after a grand on the Emma, but it's made a massive difference. Most comfy bed I've slept on now.

Might have mentioned this up there ^^^ but I really can't fault our IKEA one. Pocket sprung mattress plus foam topper <£500.

Plus it comes rolled up and vac packed to about 1 tenth it's final size, why always makes me laugh when I remember it going "FABOING!" and unfolding.

It means it's 'piss proof' as many hotel guests are incontinent.

We ditched our nectar foamy shite mattress onto our spare bed and according to any guests who stay, they get a great night’s sleep on it, I reckon it is crap but does appear to have firmed up now that it isn’t in daily use.

We opted for a sprung, pillow topped, Silentnight affair which was 3 times the cost of the shitty foam thing and worth twice as much as it hasn’t sagged at all.

We’ve also got IKEA mattresses on the other spare beds and had no complaints regarding them either.

Any chance of more info/a link? I really like a fairly firm pillow but everything I've bought seems to get my neck/head too hot

I really really need to get a new mattress - but it'll be next year.

The downside is that I need to buy a new base as well as the one I bought has two sides. Which means my mattress has a 'dip' in the middle where I sleep

Not sure why I bought the wrong base, but I think I need to get a single person one at the same time as I get the new mattress!! LOL


For now I'm going to ask someone to help me turn my mattress the other way around as my feet haven't made a 'dent' in the mattress like my shoulders have!!


But, next year I will be asking for recommendations for cool mattresses that last well

Last couple of mattresses I bought have been Ikea pocket sprung, not badly priced and still v comfortable 5 years on. I didn't really like the Emma one I tried, too warm, prefer the sprung!

I've been using spring pillows for over 20 years, after headbutting the ground (actually a forward somersault over the bars and fairing and landing back of head as first contact). Take them on holiday (in the uk anyway). Left the first in a Travellodge Second eventually got to the point where the springs didn't recover to full length, so replaced.

Treat yourself to a Baavet Duvet filled with unbleached wool. The fibres work like fir cones, closing when hot to reduce insulating and opening when cold to increase it.
