Brake Fluid disposal

I have several half filled bottles of brake fluid. Not wanting to use them as all are at least a year + old, how do I dispose of them? Is it ok to tip it into the oil recycling tank at the local recyling centre.
I've read kitty litter is an option but I don't have a cat.

I believe they also sell it to non cat owners

Into a demi john with some sugar....bit of yeast, wait at least 10 minutes and drink it.

Apply it thinly over your neighbours* cars paintwork.

It gets rid of your used fluid and provides them with a hardwearing paint protection covering.


* doesn't work on cars you own, effects are relative to neighbours dickheadedness.

Did wonder about that, but I need a more subtal approach.
Cat litter, didn't want to buy a bag when I only need a slack handful and be left with a a nearly full bag in the garage,

Combine it into one container...with old oil. Apply to council oil waste bin.

On a side note.

I had 5 used oil containers, some full, some not to full that I wanted rid of (I'd been hoarding them by mistake).

I took them and a couple of batteries to the local tip.

The guy had to unlock the oil tank, I was just draining the last of the five and he came back and had a right fit, I was only supposed to drain one!

WTF, am I supposed to come back 5 weeks in a row or something?

Also, they won't take the empty plastic oil bottles, I had to take them home and put them in my bin!!!

They didn't take batteries at that site either and I had to drive to the one on the other side of town to dump them!!!

Mind you, you're fortunate. Our recycling depot is hardly ever open, so when it is it's crammed and you have to take proof of residence in the area. It's only a matter of time before you have to book a slot.

You either need a pass supplied by the council (that you can apply for) or proof of address and ownership of the vehicle!

You usually get in ok without a pass, but occasionally the jobsworths want to see your V5!

I wouldn't mind booking, it would even out the peaks and troughs, but they've gone from being open 7 days to 2 and one of those is Saturday.

(Fly tipping has increased, obvs).

Ours started doing booking during 'rona, it's still going. I don't actually mind, it means no queuing! They only police it with a disinterested guy standing by the gate with a list of reg numbers.

Welcome to my world - and you can't book for same day, always has to be in advance. To be fair, it means no queueing to get in and the staff at the tip are very helpful.

I use my old engine oil to paint the decking. Yeah I probably shouldn't.

Sprinkle it onto the gravel somewhere.

Or put the tin in a paper bag and drop it into a litter bin.

Or saturate old rags with it and set it on fire.

Or write “time capsule 1971” on the tin and bury it.

I have to say our local recycling centre is great,open 4 days a week and take absolutely everything.
