No, not that you have to but rather it is adjustable on the fly should you want to. It's an awful lot of extra money for a 'nice to have' though!! Arguably not necessary on the road but then a lot of things aren't, but are nice to have.

I test rode a MT09GT a couple of weeks ago and I wasn't really impressed enough to buy one considering I tend to keep my vehicles for a very long time. There was nothing really bad about, actually there was a lot to like, but it but it didn't really blow me away. The motor certainly wasn't lacking power as it accelerated very very well, but that 'taking off like a scalded cat' feeling got wearing quite quickly, as did the engine noise, that got right on my nerves after a while but a pair of ear plugs would sort that out easily.
and the 'comfort seat' is a crime against the trade descriptions. (the bike had 2 miles on the clock when I set off)
