Can you tell our manky ginger furry thing that? Since we've moved he's taken to repeatedly.shitting under my office desk and pissing on door mats, despite having a near half-acre garden and a litter tray just in case.

I think the key point is 'Since we've moved'. I'm guessing he feels like the new place isn't 'home' yet, or he feels insecure there. Are there other cats in the neighbourhood that he feels threatened by? Cat psychology is a minefield.

Yep, pretty much since we moved about 4 months ago.
Someone over the road has a big old Bengal that let himself in to our place and shit on our kitchen floor and beat up our moggy, so we installed a microchip controlled cat flap.
Funny that in our old house he was the bully moggy of the area, now he's shit scared of his own shadow.

Seriously, I can imagine how annoying it must be. I'm not sure what else you can do except hope he gets used to the new place and becomes less anxious. There's a guy on Youtube (Jackson Galaxy) who's a bit of a cat whisperer. Some of his vids might give some useful tips.

Maybe get them used to the idea that 'coat'='walkies'...they'll be climbing in and buckling up.

And when they get old and cantankerous, and work out that coat = cold and wet. Then see him run and hide!

As an after-thought, does your cat have somewhere (preferably high up) that he can use as a safe space? If he can feel secure in the new house, he'll be less inclined to piss and shit around the place. Also - does he have a cat scratching post, and is there somewhere warm he can rest in? Ours loves to lie on the window sill when the sun is out, and/or when the radiator by the window is warm. The bedroom window sill is also a good place for him to watch the world go by.

He did have the run of the house until the pissing and shitting started, now he's banished to the (big) kitchen and utility overnight but does have views over the back garden through French doors etc. He tends to sit on one of the dining rable chairs to get his view.

The BBC Horizon programme on 'The secret life of the cat' was interesting - they tagged up to 50 cats in a Surrey village and monitored them. When my new neighbours arrived, both their cats seemed to find my garden/house far more interesting than their own (there are probably more small mammals to harvest in my garden ). Now, they can't seem to bear the sight of each other. One of them seems to have claimed the territory and beats the other one up if they happen to meet in it. How they get on indoors is anyone's guess.

I remember that Horizon doc too...in fact, I commented on it when we first moved to our house. We had loads and loads of cats visiting our garden, which now we don't get. I'm willing to bet the previous owner had a cat, but when we moved in (or more critically when that cat moved out) there was suddenly some unclaimed turf available. Probably took a while for the new pecking order to sort itself out.

Our cat seems to have 'ownership' of our gardens, front and back, and also those of the neighbours on both sides but last weekend Mrs Mango was instituting a scorched earth policy on the front garden overgrowth and as soon as she'd finished our cat started spraying the newly cleared area. I've never seen him do that before, but obviously he was taking no chances in letting any other local cats claim the area.

Previous owner had a dog but that lived in the kitchen, didn't have run of the house.

Our Frenchies! Top two are my daughters and the two pups are ours and my sisters.

Here's mine again, taking a breather from his busy schedule of helping pheasants take off, teaching squirrels to climb trees faster and showing deer the way into the next bloody county.


Pheasants and squirrel's are pretty much fine with me cos he doesn't go far but when he spots a deer he bounds off, tail held high and comes back when theyve bounded over a fence he can't manage.
Other dogs and he's fine, but he does love to chase deer. So far (touch wood) the deer are faster than he is. Also I never realised just how many deer are in the woods I'm always walking through, its a surprising amount
