Your favourite dog breed?

Had a few over the years, family have always had dogs too.

My personal favourite was my Patterdale Terrier who succumbed to the big C about 6 years ago. Lovely temperament, bit hard to train (local farmer saw him as a pup, said to me "Patterdale? Good luck with that!")

We've had loads of collies and have 4 at the moment, but the German shepherd has really worked her way in to my heart,

This is our second one and we will probably always have shepherds in the house

I'm sort of in that camp too.I had a crossbred dog when I was a boy,but Mrs.Skub isn't a dog fan and I'm a sucker for a quiet life.

Breed wise I like Shepherds,Doberman and Rottweiler,not much fussed on little fanny licker yappy bastard type,though a mate has had several miniature Schnauzers and they've always been characters.

Rottweiler or Rottweiler Crosses.

I've had 2 full bred Rottie boys and one full bred Rottie girl.

Now I have a Rotterman girl and an absolutely huge Shepweiler girl.

My ex had Rotkitas, another excellent dog.

Rottweilers are just big cuddle monsters, yes they can be utterly ferocious if need be, but any of my ones have been complete pussycats. Misty the Rotterman hates other dogs apart from her Beagle boyfriend and Bella. Bella loves everything, especially me. She's the most loyal and protective dog I've ever seen.

My favourite dogs are well trained ones.

For a general combo of size etc I have a soft spot for Jack Russells, quite like Viszlas too.

I used to laugh at dachsunds, but they're Feisty, quite brainy and v loyal etc.

Dogs I don't like: corgis and slobbery ones.

I love Labradors and Staffies. We had a couple of Labs and a couple of Great Danes when I was a kid - not all at the same time!! Would never have a Dane though!!

Wouldn't want to own one though - too much of a tie! At least with a cat you can go out all day or even a weekend and leave them!!

One thing I really dislike are dogs that owners can't or can't be bothered to train. Some of my friends have these. The dogs are lovely but not well trained and even as an onlooker it bugs the hell out of me!!

I'm kind of biased in favour of Border Collies as I've had a few over the years but we sort of accidentally ended up with a Bull Lurxher this time round and I've realised that smokthcoated short haired dogs are low maintenance, sometimes needs a jacket when its cold or raining but that keeps him cleaner and doesn't smell like a wet dog so much.
I'll generally avoulid the large brachycephalic breeds as they overheat and have breathing issues (English Bulldogs have an average lifespan of seven or so years, thats just too short for me) and I've joked about Labradors being a self propelled stomach and I've only recently found out theres a genetic thing about that, some of them are missing a gene that regulates appetite.
Still, a healthy Lab is a good looking dog.

As our dog is mostly white I've looked up a bit on white dogs, it seems that about 12% of Dalmations are deaf, that goes upto 51% if the dalmation has blue eyes and even if one of its parents has blue eyes it raises a lot.
Lots of white English Bull Terriers are also deaf and the same goes for white Boxers* which I think were partly bred from them.
I like Spaniels, proper enthusiastic tail waggers.

Must admit though, I think I'd have another Bull Lurcher or maybe the larger end of the spectrum and a Bull Greyhound cross, those things can bloody shift.
Currently I reckon the best looking dog round the town is a white Bull Grey called Ghost (he's also deaf as a post) and what a proud looking chap he is.
About an inch or so less than a local Great Dane but so much more coordinated that he makes it look like a right gawky fecker. No verbal recall though.


I've never had a small dog (well, none smaller than a sheepdog bitch)yet and kind of avoided em, thing is they often live longer than big dogs which is a consideration.
Daughter has a French Bulldog, nice little chap (if a bit agressive with other dogs) but he"s brachycephalic and can't breath quietly, personally I'm not keen on encouraging people to breed em even though I love him to bits.


*White cats are also more likely to be deaf than other colours. Genetics eh?

Had both a GSD and a Rough Collie together as pups (Lassie type not the Sheltie). Both were wonderful with equal + and - points but if I was to get another it would be a Rough Collie because of temperament.

The GSD would run through puddles and splash about whereas the Collie would walk around the puddle - lol.

I’m not sure that predictability is a great thing in a wolf.

It's a LOT better than unpredictability in a wolf...Especially in something the size of the male I had, 144lb & could rest his chin on the kitchen counter with his feet on the floor. His sister was 120lb.
I used to take them to my local boozer. There were two, sometimes three, old Navajo who hung out in the corner & without fail, every time we went there they would both head straight over to the corner & hang out with the Injuns. They never made any effort to make friends with the pups, the pups just decided that's who they wanted to hang out with. I guess the rest of us weren't Native enough.

This is ours. Fantastic little dogs; stubborn, independent, hugely intelligent, and real characters. She’ll be 10 this year.

If we’d have got them at the same age I think we may have got two but she’s 10 now and set in her ways - I don’t think she’d appreciate having a puppy running round.
