End of life helmets - what do you do with them?
Not sure if this has been asked before, but once a crash helmet reaches end of life, does it have any utility i.e. can it be re-purposed into something else? Mrs Mango and I have been arguing about this (no surprises there, then) and as far as I'm concerned once it's finished being headwear it gets skipped. In my view if I'm not prepared to carry on wearing it, I shouldn't hand it down to anyone else, as I've already decided it's not fit for purpose.
But can you think of any use for a lid once it's primary purpose has ended?

I skipped all mine over the years, but I believe now the emergency services can use them for training?

You could strip the internals, drill a few holes and make a pair of statement hanging baskets to deck the front door.
(There's a guy on YT that cuts up old skateboards, laminates them into blocks then turns some quite a-may-zing bowls and stuff from them. So, if you've got a few old helmets it's an excuse to buy a lot of kit for the workshop....so you can recycle them.

List them on eBay as 'lightly used' and with 'plenty of life left'.

I must admit that the idea of a crash helmet hanging basket appeals, but I will probably contact the local emergency services first to see if they have a use for them...Skub wrote: Sat Dec 16, 2023 4:57 pm I skipped all mine over the years, but I believe now the emergency services can use them for training?

I've heard this "emergency services use 'em for training" thing a few times but couldn't find anyone who was interested!
I've always just skipped 'em, but not after cutting the straps off with scissors to render 'em officially dead. T'was the same with Baby D's old car seat.

Fire stations and paramedics are not in the slightest bit interested in them - I asked the question a while ago - and skipped two of mine.

Probably because they've already got thousands.Mr Moofo wrote: Sun Dec 17, 2023 12:12 pm Fire stations and paramedics are not in the slightest bit interested in them - I asked the question a while ago - and skipped two of mine.

OK, thanks for that. Thought I'd ask the question, any way.Rockburner wrote: Sun Dec 17, 2023 5:31 pmProbably because they've already got thousands.Mr Moofo wrote: Sun Dec 17, 2023 12:12 pm Fire stations and paramedics are not in the slightest bit interested in them - I asked the question a while ago - and skipped two of mine.
So - would they have any future as suspended planters (just the shell, obvs...) ?

One fm helmet I had years ago got damaged badly by another rider dropping his bike on it, so we had a despatchers game of football with it in the yard...

My bike training school has a few hanging on the outside of the building with fake plants in them for decorationmangocrazy wrote: Sat Dec 16, 2023 5:35 pmI must admit that the idea of a crash helmet hanging basket appeals, but I will probably contact the local emergency services first to see if they have a use for them...Skub wrote: Sat Dec 16, 2023 4:57 pm I skipped all mine over the years, but I believe now the emergency services can use them for training?![]()
