I think it wouldn’t last that long before I ended up in paid employment again.
I have a reasonable compromise, albeit facilitated by a few years of a final salary pension and Filly still working (& with a good pension when she stops).

Plus occasional part-time work and volunteer work (which is mentally challenging).

I had been considering reducing my hours. But two years of a crap project and an absolute shitstorm project decided 'enough' for me. Work now is by agreement and without the previous pressures.

I'm going to retire from my current role in 24 months and 25 days. I'll be 55. BUT, my pension will no longer support me and the wife though so I will probably have to work for the foreseeable future.

I have got the option to return to doing the same as I do now, but as civilian staff. Tbh, I want out if I can, it's a very demanding job, but the monthly pension plus the salary that a civilian earns in my role is a tempting proposition.

So, I'll probably end up working til I drop if I'm honest.

I'd like to retire... today...

I'll realistically expect/hope to retire at 60. However, in reality, i'm not too worried either way.

My job is ok, but it's not my life... However, i also wouldn't want to take one of my passions and make that my life as it has potential to suck the fun out of it.

I never hated work. I sometimes really enjoyed my job(s) and sometimes hated them. Even in the same company things change, especially when they expect you to do your stuff in a different sector or if they 'restructure'

As said before, I didn't intend to retire, I just quit intending to get back in the saddle, probably freelance/contract. (First offer was in Health....which was one of the reasons I quit  My comfort zone was energy/utilities/oil etc).

(Some time earlier I'd taken 3 months - unpaid - bereavement leave and, despite the circumstances, found it a bit of a battery recharge but the side effect was I had no fear of just walking away without another job lined up. I wasn't bored and didn't feel 'reduced' by not working. I was fortunate though, I could survive pretty well without the income - no mortgage etc).

I just planned and did all those things I'd wanted to do and never had time. That kept the first few years busy.

I don't have the option at the moment but I couldn't sit around doing nothing and if I'm doing something I might as well get paid for it.
Fortunately I like my work, if not I'd be looking to downsize to something like a local delivery driver or handyman.

I like a long break and had a few 3 month gaps when contracting but by the end of it I'm ready to go back.

I normally take most of August off and have never had a problem being off work for that amount of time or get itchy to be back at work, but then its summer and most of that time i'm on holiday or loafing about at home in the garden. But then I get excited about getting back to work when the time comes and look forward to getting back to my little studio. The thought off being off and staring at shit weather through the window most certainly doesn't appeal, that I do know.

I'f I retired now, i'd end up helping the old folk out and feel i'd become a sort of carer/personal shopper, so i'd rather be at work doing what I enjoy than that. Time may come that I have to do that, but I don't feel that time is now. My wife has now semi-retired and loves it and wanted me to do the same, so I did ask about reducing my hours, which was approved. I gave my reasons for asking as due to increasing demands at home and said I wouldn't necessarily be doing it, just exploring options for future decisions. So At any point I can drop to a 3 or 4 day week which is a nice option to have.

If there were no elderly dependants, would I retire? TBH I don't really feel old enough to retire? Maybe if I didn't like what I did for a living I would, but that isn't the case.

TLDR. Dunno?

I don't know your skills, but there are plenty of organisations that would be glad of volunteer support.

Plus, volunteering is good for your mental health too.

I am retired, in that I do zero paid work.

I retired for the 1st time in September 1996
I then retired at least 3 or 4 more times, it finally stuck in about 2010.

I still volunteer, watchkeeper and trainer for NCI, and Trustee for a local MAT, and Governor at 2 local schools.

I have threatened to stop everything when I hit 80, but time will tell. I might fall off my perch before then.

Was going to be 55 but we decided to upsize for 10 years, so now likely I'll have to graft ( ) until I'm 65......

Well, I'd say I have at least another 20 working years ahead of me. So I can't even answer that. I mean, in an ideal world I'd retire in my 50's, but that's never going to happen unless I strike it lucky.

60 is my plan, I made a decision 18 months ago where I could have stayed with the company I'd worked for for 19 years but had come to hate (the company not the job) and gone part time at 54/55, which would mean 2 on 6 off (days and nights) still on decent money. I decided that another 6 years there even part time was still too much hate in my life so at 52 got a new job 5 on 5 off days only, I feel so much better for both not doing nights and working for a firm I don't despise and it's mentally much more challenging. I could have still retired before 60 but decided to spunk a lot of money on a motorhome so 60 it is.

I doubt i will make retirement age but i'm not in any rush to retire.

I quite like my job tbh and the people i work with.

I would just get bored being retired. I would probably turn into an alchi and start busking outside the local Spar shop for packets of sandwiches and scratch cards...;)

There is no way i will be able to retire early, so i have no real plans to retire, my retirement will be death at which point nothing fucking matters anyway as i will be dead!

I have a mate who retired at 47, he was a senior actuary for AXA for many years and now just spends his time travelling to all the brewdog pubs around the world and does some marking of maths papers for Universities (i think it's uni papers) for some extra spare beer money every now and then as apparently he is in the top 10% of the best maths brains in the UK or some such, he keeps banging on about that, practically though he only just about manages to walk without falling over because he is always drunk as he is retired, bastard...

I retired 13 Days ago.
1 year early.
I was just a shit Sparky like some on here.
I’m currently laying on my bed in a Hotel in Auckland.
Pick the Bike up tomorrow
Eight Weeks here then over to Aus.
If all goes well, I might have a Residency application lodged in October. That would allow me to work.
I quite fancy being an Outback Trucker.

I should have enough to retire by 60-62 (currently 54.5), given the shite state of NR and the dubious decisions management seem to be making I’ll probably be gagging to go by then.

I'm 56, 57 in May, I'm not sure if I'm ready to retire, I'd like 6 months off work, if work offered me 6 months off unpaid with the guarantee that my job would still be there when I wanted to come back I'd take it, but this won't happen as there is no one else to do what I currently do, but it may be viable next year.

Financially I won't be able to actually retire until I'm 67, but at 61 I will be able to afford to go to 3 days a week or move to a less stressful job

About three and a half years ago. I'd been phoning it in for 4 or 5 years previously, but Covid finally convinced me enough was enough.
