I've been looking about with a view to finding a watch I like from 1984...why so specific? Well how old is someone from 1984 going to turn this year?

I quite like the look of the Seiko 7a28-7201, which started as official RAF issue in 1984 and is also easy to date thanks to handy MoD serial numbering which ends /84.

Anyone have any good suggestions for watches of that era? I'm thinking of stuff that's from the 80s IYSWIM, rather than something which happened to still be in production then (e.g. loads of Swiss models).

Part of me was thinking "that's a lot for a boggo looking quartz watch" but then the part of me whcih read some more thought "oh right it's not just a cheapo quartz watch"

Still has 15 jewels for example, all metal gear train, fully serviceable. The first ever quartz fully analogue chronograph too.

There's no denying it

It even has a 'nudge mode' so you can jiggle the handles back to where they're supposed to be and dial out the classic long term quartz drift.

Quartz vs. Mechanical is an interesting debate with basically no logic behind it, so I don't even try for the most part

50th anniversary Casio Casiotron are available for pre order. I used to do a bit of buying and selling of Casio watches and do love a Casio, this one is going to be around £500 so a bit more than I'd spend. A lightly used one should see your money back in a couple of years, maybe even a small profit.

I quite like it, but a monkey? It's a bit expensive.

The official UK price was £442. Casio made 4000 for Worldwide distribution and it looks like they've mostly all been sold. There are a few around at inflated prices and of course they're now appearing on Ebay at a gigantic mark up.

Looking for something else, I just found this in the loft-of-plenty! Think it was my Dads? What a lovely watch! Set the time and put it on and it’s ticking away nicely!

I think it must have been my Dads long service award from Fords? Im sure they gavehim a watch for 40 years service. Its a lovely retro thing and I think i'll keep it as a dress watch.

Garrard were a popular choice for presentation watches. I’ve got my grandad’s 40 year Garrard watch from his ICI days.
