Crete, anyone been?

Post by Rockburner »

Summer sun holiday is booked, heading for a villa on the east end of Crete, but I've never been there, has anyone visited? Got any recommendations?

I had a week in Chania in September last year. If you want recommendations of places to eat there I can help. However, they'll be focused on vegetarian and vegan options.

I went there 40 years ago.

I imagine it has changed a bit!

I was going to recommend Taverna Aloni here, but it might have changed hands

If it is the same old couple running it the food was great and ask for a litre of his home made raki it was excellent.

Rethymno was very touristy but Chania was nice as is Agios Nikolaos. Herakleion is ok in the middle but a bit moth eaten as you spread out.

The Minoan palace is overrated but if you want old ruins there is a large place in the centre somewhere where there are acres of it all exposed. Found it - Gortys

Driving is nowhere near as bad as some people say because locals are laid back drivers

I last went just before lockdown

We stayed in Agios Nikolaos this summer and have been 3 times before over the last 30 years. It's our go to place when we really need a stress free holiday that we know that we'll enjoy. Really nice place but only explored outside the town on the first visit which was 30 years ago so probably not relevant. Would definitely recommend but not much going on other than a beach, bars, places to eat and day trips. It's not full of kids, not that sort of place. If you want that then Malia is where you want but I thought that it looked like my worst nightmare.

If you like a bit of self torture, walk the length of Samaria Gorge, top down.

Don't worry if you get hurt, the army will get you out on the back of a donkey.

I've been a few times. It's nice in spring, hot in summer. We stayed near Suda Bay previously and I dragged the family around the military graves and stuff. I can't tell you how much they loved it in the blazing heat.
The food is nice, rabbit particularly good. Worth getting a car and having an explore.

The package we found includes a car so that's taken care of.

TBH I'm hoping for a few days simply doing very little!

I've been twice, it was feckin hot in August, the Knossos is a bit shit and don't get lost in the mountains, it can get a little scary.
