Gas boiler going burble

Daily Boiler Bulletin.

Engineer turned up. Switched boiler back on.

Ran perfectly. No gurgling or anything.
He thought the fan sounded a tad noisy (sounded normal to me). It mixes the air and gas before combustion. He's coming back today to fit a new one. Can't imagine why that would cause gurgling/boiling noises but hey ho.

I wonder if my furtling with the condensate soakaway broke an air lock or something. Can't say I noticed a rush of condensate when I was investigating.

Maybe it was just pining for a bit of attention.

Problems with the fan were the death-knell for my (20 year old) Viessmann boiler. We had a replacement, but the bolts holding it in place were corroded to buggery and snapped off when the engineer tried to undo them. So probably good to get a replacement fan earlier in its life.

Make sure he uses anti-seize paste on the bolts when re-fitting...

It's a delayed action fuse. The burbling was to tell the bomber to get the fcuk out. It will take the roof off after an indeterminate time. Have you seen the aftermath of a gas explosion?

Update:

I do believe I've cracked it! I went out to give the soakaway a good coat of looking at today, 3 hours after the heating had gone off. The condensate was up to the inflow tube.

Gave the limestone chips a good jabbing with a proper 'man's screwdriver'. It's like a weak cement mix. All the fine particles and shrunken chippings have made something the Romans would be proud of. It appears to be nearly waterproof!

1hr of jabbing and scratting and the plastic tube soakaway is emptied. I'll monitor progress once the heating is on again. If I put more chippings in they'll be thoroughly washed first to remove the particulate stuff.

Now, do I tell the engineer before or after he fits the new fan?

PS It's a bit pants that the error code is so generic for 'your condensate drain ain't draining'.

Yeah, 'Ignition failure' as a fault code is so generic as to be worthless. Well done with the application of the manly screwdriver, though.

So, I told the engineer that I'd sleuthed out the problem. He was quite relieved as he was having 'a bit of a day'. So I made the poor chap a decent mug of coffee and we monitored the soakaway and discussed options for refilling it with limestone.

In the general chinwag I laughed about how one day their system told me I needed to book a boiler service, then when I came to do that a few days later the system said 'You can't book a service, we'll contact you and don't worry if it's more than a year between services'.

He said 'Oh, I'll book that in'. System says 'This boiler has breakdown cover only'.

So I sent him on his way and said I'd contact them because s'not correct. Check the account...it includes an annual service, it's due, click here to make an appointment.

System says: 'Soz. No can do, call this number'.

Not really bothered as he checked everything but I wouldn't want them to void the 5 year warranty. Ho hum.

Bloody company has gone to the dogs since I left.
