Penetrating oils
need to replace a glowplug on the van. The internet says they need a damned good soaking in penetrating spray for a week before even looking at them.
Forums say pb blaster, which I can get, but is a bit pricey!
Others say 1:1 acetone and atf does the job.
Anyone with any experience of such things?

I was always told plusgas was the best.
I've watched video on the tinternets of people using crayons and candles wax to get stuff shifted too.

I'd reach for the PlusGas in that situation, as well. If there's a well around the glowplug that the penetrating fluid can sit in, all the better. Carefully directed heat from something like a MAPP gas torch to the area immediately around the glowplug prior to squirting in the PlusGas (or whatever) will also help.
But yes, glowplugs have a bad rep fer seizing in place...

Apparently the regime is apply PF for a week whilst still driving around.
Pray to Mr Benz twice a day and don't use a mahoosive ratchet.
It would have been nice if it were one of the front plugs ie moderately accessible, but no, no4!

Re: Penetrating oils
I’ve never had to remove one but if I had to I’d take the car for a run to get the engine hot and then use plus gas on it and leave it for a while.

Only ever took them out with a hot engine and no oil. Yet to snap one but then again, i have only ever changed three sets and soon to be four.

Re: Penetrating oils
PlusGas here. I used it on my totally rusted 23 yr old exhaust studs on the Triumph. Three weeks of spraying and heating with a bunson torch and then I used an extractor stud to remove them. They all popped out with no issues.

Re: Penetrating oils
I dropped a load of PlusGas down the glow plug holes on my VW CC a day before I changed them, they came out so easily without as much as a squeek.

Re: Penetrating oils
wd40 penetrating oil has been bought. Need the weather to improve so I can crawl into the engine bay to start the spraying!
