No have icepack on arm watching rubbish on telly and wondering if I can have some ale for medicinal purposes during dry January.

Cried my eyes out at the funeral of a close friend and erstwhile lodger. She was only 50, FFS. Fly free, Deb.

Had a thoroughly depressing afternoon visiting elderly people in various stages of poor health, distress and confusion. Dry January just exited stage left. Tonight ladies and gentlemen,we drink to life!

Been to Costco.

At least I saved a few quid filling the car up with Kirkland finest gogo juice.

Nearly a week later and I'm still on the fence, aside from BBQ'ing I've never been that much of a fan of cooking, and this is cooking from scratch which takes some getting used to.MrLongbeard wrote: Sun Jan 05, 2025 2:19 pm Signed up to Gousto, I was getting seriously peeved at having to make a choice as to what I wanted to eat and then not being able to get ingredients locally when I wanted them, and being the only one in the house that likes spicy foreign muck often meant food going to waste or me not eating, so I'll give this a go.

Not had a bad meal yet, smaller portions than I'd cook for myself, but that's a good thing

We have always cooked from scratch. When the kids were growing up,it was me doing the bulk of the cooking. These days I rarely slave over a hot stove, instead I'm content to let Mrs.Skub indulge her love of cooking.MrLongbeard wrote: Sat Jan 11, 2025 8:45 pmNearly a week later and I'm still on the fence, aside from BBQ'ing I've never been that much of a fan of cooking, and this is cooking from scratch which takes some getting used to.MrLongbeard wrote: Sun Jan 05, 2025 2:19 pm Signed up to Gousto, I was getting seriously peeved at having to make a choice as to what I wanted to eat and then not being able to get ingredients locally when I wanted them, and being the only one in the house that likes spicy foreign muck often meant food going to waste or me not eating, so I'll give this a go.

Not had a bad meal yet, smaller portions than I'd cook for myself, but that's a good thingso we'll keep at it for a while yet. It helps that I've quit vaping this week so suddenly find myself with time on my hands and fingers that need something to do.
I have to say,if I had to fend for myself,I doubt I'd be bothered with the time it takes preparing, cooking and the endless clearing up,I'd be a lazy chicken ding man. I subscribe to the 'food is fuel' ethos. Eat stuff and move on.

Re: What have you done today thread?
As above, we've done Gousto for quite a few years now.
I do most of it. I find cooking from scratch quite fulfilling for the most part. I've always liked cooking though and in general i like knowing how to do the stuff I'm interested at the fundamental level. I usually just skim read the Gousto card and go yep, I see where you're going with this and do the rest myself.
BTW anyone who says food is only fuel is dead inside

Re: What have you done today thread?
I’ve been doing this for 9 years so it’s not news!! (Ok, in smaller vehicles - the doing it with a tacho card means I don’t do 17+ hour days anymore
Hopefully the tiring bit of driving a limited speed vehicle and not having people sat next to me to chat will ease soon and I’ll have the energy to do stuff when I get home

Got married to a wife who'd never peeled a spud never mind cooked a meal, so I carried on until I eventually got her - reluctantly
I went through a 'fancy/cheffy' phase and much bread making but now it's a box of about 30 'old faithful' recipes with the occasional bit of ooh-la-la.

The reason we do Gousto is precisely to avoid having all the same old faithful dishes over and over

The 30 do evolve and tbh cook books work as well as Gousto y'know, if you have time to shop for ingredients.Mr. Dazzle wrote: Sun Jan 12, 2025 9:32 am The reason we do Gousto is precisely to avoid having all the same old faithful dishes over and over![]()

I cannot fathom why anyone pays Gousto to deliver stuff.

Re: What have you done today thread?
Because someone presents me with a list of 20-30 dishes to choose from and then 2 weeks later all the stuff I need to make them arrives.
I'm fully capable of looking through the Internet, finding dishes I want, going to the shop and buying all the ingredients (and then having various things left over because you cant buy only 7g of gochugang etc) and then making them.
I just don't want to.

Because I can't buy the ingredients I need locally, suddenly fancy a Beef Keema Aloo Matar? that's a 2 hour round trip to a supermarket or a multi day wait for online orderingMr Moofo wrote: Sun Jan 12, 2025 10:50 am

Because I'm really shit at deciding what I want to eat on any given day
Because any ingredients I do buy will mostly be wasted as I'm the only one in the house that would eat it
Because who needs shopping
Because 101 other reasons everyone is different

Woke up regretting falling off the dry January wagon!
After a few self indulgent hours of feeling sorry myself I got my act together and prepped the sunday roast and got the brisket in the slow cooker. Now I'm off to visit some old folk...

Re: What have you done today thread?
Last day of our holiday in Vietnam and Cambodia. We flew into Hanoi last night and spent today chilling at some Crown Plaza hotel 20 miles from the airport.
Now back at Hanoi airport for our flight back to Istanbul and then on to Dalaman. Its been a good trip although too many temples for me personally (most stated off as Hindu temples and then became Buddhist temples - it seems Buddhists have pretty shit property management) but Angkor Wat is certainly impressive.
Watched a few hundred thousand bats flying out of a cave as well, probably the only time I'll see that sort of sight.
