See, if I'd been paying attention to the news etc I would have seen that DeepThink were about to drop a bomb - then I'd have sold all my NVIDA shares for 150 on Friday and bought 'em all back, plus a few more, for 119 on Monday.

But I wasn't paying attention.

If financial advisors were any good, they'd all be rich and retired.

A lot of them do make money and eventually retire.

Yeah, generally they aren't their to turn your 4d into £1M, just help you make the most of what you actually have.

I'm sure quite a few of them retire 'comfortably' without taking big risks with their income.

Yes, an advisor could (maybe they do, by special request) advise a client on a high risk plan that might make a fortune but is much more likely to make their money disappear.

Yeah the holder gets the original value and is paid interest for the whole time they hold it.

There's no guarantee the organisation who originally issued the bond will still be in existence when it's time to claim that original value though. That's why credit ratings exist - they essentially say how likely it is the bond will actually pay out at the end. That's where "junk bonds" come in; bonds where it's highly likely the person who originally issued it - the person who borrowed the money - won't be able to pay up.

They go up and down for pretty much the same reason any other financial thing goes up and down; Because people think it's more/less likely they'll get a better return on their money elsewhere

That's why I looked at gilts rather than bonds. It also explains why the value has dropped a little. Thanks!

I'm not looking at mine at the moment cos I know I'll be sad. Trump is fucking everything up and I'm guessing my pension is down, I'm not retiring any time soon so no point in upsetting myself. I made the mistake of looking a couple of month after Putin started his Ukraine adventure and had lost over 30k by that point, so I stopped looking.

I had a cheeky review of my DC pension online the other day and binned off one the funds that was under-performing for an Islamic Growth Fund which is seeing some good returns.

I have a small Nutmeg savings pot, heavily skewed to equities. I was bragging about the 20+% return over two years before said shit-gibbon started throwing his bananas around.

Filly talked about this, partly to be closer to her sister in Cornwall.

I gave Filly a shopping list:
- not hilly
- good local public transport, railway station nearby
- large-ish hospital nearby
- reasonable shops nearby
- nice pub / restaurant nearby

So we went on holiday to the area with 'living there's viewpoint rather than 'on holiday'. Not particularly impressed.

Then we visited SinL - who said "We're moving back upcountry!

Final straws were when she said "You like where you live, so why move?" and Filly said "We've spent 25 years getting the house how we want it, why leave for somewhere else?"

So, move 'for' something, or 'away' from something. But know what it is / they are.
