Something in the back of my mind is telling me that the oil will be knackered coz of lots of short journeys.
Or is this an old wives tail I must have heard?

Not if it's been changed regularly.
I think the main issues with petrols and short trips is that they often don't get warm enough to burn off condensation, so exhausts and sensor in exhausts tend to rot a bit quicker.
Short trips really kill modern diesels tho'

Just as likely it's had the first service at 1,000km and then not been touched. Oil ought to be changed annually irrespective of mileage, although I guess most don't bother. It would be worth the peace of mind to take it for an oil change.
How is your island for rodents? If the car has just been sat around on the finca (or maybe worse, in the town) waiting for its next drive, it'd be worth opening the airbox for a whiff and inspection at least. Looks like on this model one torx driver and you're in.
