Black screen of death!
My desktop pc will not wake when its gone into stand by or sleep mode? As soon as the screen goes blank, its all over. The only way I can wake it up is to power it right off by holding the power button down or switching it off at the wall and restarting it. But here's the weird thing, I can remote into it just fine? Why does it do this oh techy ones?

When you get back into your PC go to Power settings and turn them all off, including the screensaver. Why does anybody actually need a screensaver these days, anyway?

Re: Black screen of death!
It certainly was in days of yore with CRTs, but I'm less convinced that it's still a problem with OLED and LCD screens. Besides, even in days of CRTs you would still need to leave a static image screen present for days, probably months for any degradation to become apparent. The only real examples of burn-in that I've seen have been on screens in a data centre that had a static image displayed for months/years without changing.MrLongbeard wrote: Fri Mar 28, 2025 11:40 amBecause screen burn in is realmangocrazy wrote: Fri Mar 28, 2025 11:08 am When you get back into your PC go to Power settings and turn them all off, including the screensaver. I haven't used a screensaver for over 20 years and I've never experienced burn in on any monitor; CRT, LCD or OLED.

It certainly does still happen, I only have to walk around the lab / office and see numerous screens with issues.mangocrazy wrote: Fri Mar 28, 2025 11:53 amIt certainly was in days of yore with CRTs, but I'm less convinced that it's still a problem with OLED and LCD screens. I turn my computers off when I'm done with them for the day but I know plenty who leave them running 24/7 who would have problems with icons and taskbars being burnt in.
And there's also the issue with image retention on newer screens, not a permanent problem but makes the screen messy / unusable until it sorts it self out.
I think / believe it's an over reported issue, but when you're dropping big money on a monitor I'll take the precaution just the same.

Re: Black screen of death!
I'm not advising anyone to leave screens with a static image on for days on end - common sense does need to apply after all. My PC and monitor get switched off every night and when I know I'll be away from the PC for any extended period during the day.
But getting back to ToePain's original question, the answer will almost certainly be in the Power Management (or whatever it's called) section of Control Panel (assuming he's using Windows). Lengthen the time taken before the screensaver kicks in and also uncheck any boxes that say 'suspend when screensaver in use' or some such. The key is to stop the PC going into suspended status, that will be what is causing his issues.
I just find screensavers a pain and completely unnecessary for my way of working. YMMV.

I've clicked on never go to sleep but i'm locked out of anything further. Its with support now as my expensive graphics card has been sounding like a bell jet ranger lately and that can apparently cause BSOD!?
Re leaving screens on, my employer, like most others I imagine, bangs on about carbon footprints and net zero crap, yet encourages hybrid working, but to remote in you have to leave your PCs on. So even when there's only a few people on site every PC is left on!

We don't, we just use lappies and VPN into the server as needed, no need for an office based PC to just be sitting there

To a degree yes, but they're shit when you want to drive a 34" ultrawide or a couple of 24" monitors as they don't have the ummph to drive the pixels above 60hz, and I'm currently trying to get a couple of directors to sign off on me having something a little more flashy.

Don't you do a lot of image processing on your PC? I've found virtual machines utterly rubbish for any processor heavy task, I can get the RAM and number of cores ramped up loads but they seem unable to go beyond the processor power of a cheap tablet.Taipan wrote: Fri Mar 28, 2025 2:02 pmThat makes alot more sense!MrLongbeard wrote: Fri Mar 28, 2025 1:24 pmWe don't, we just use lappies and VPN into the server as needed, no need for an office based PC to just be sitting there
If you can connect remotely to it then it hasn't crashed, I'd be looking at the monitor to find out why it doesn't switch on.

Have you tried logging it with the IT helpdesk, you know it's their job to fix it, they get paid for it and everything. Obviously you'll have to tell them you already tried turning it off and on again.

Re: Black screen of death!
Screen is the biggest power use on your PC innit, that's why I have a screensaver*
Savin' the planet.
We all remote into desktops BTW, but only for simulations and stuff like that. But they're generally all sat their nearly 24/7 doin' maffs so we're sweating them assets. I.e. the leccy to run them isn't redundant.
*Well not a screensaver, it just turns off

Re: Black screen of death!
Just turn the screen off. In my previous jobs, I had dozens of PCs in racks without screens for remote access.

Re: Black screen of death!
I dont have teh problem when working remotely. Its only when I'm onsite the issue arises. Go for a cuppa and come back and have to unplug thre pc and then power it back up as it no longer responds to the mouse or keyboard.,
