When diid..........

Post by Le_Fromage_Grande »

A bikers Sunday breakfast change from being a hangover, black coffee, 2 aspirin and a B&H to a big greasy fry up in a cafe?

About 1996. Strangely just thinking about it I got a massive craving for a cigarette even though I've not had one in 30 years

Never was a B&H - they were posh fag's. Woodbine or Players back in the day. When filter tips became the thing it was Goldleaf, or No 6 if you were strapped for cash.

Samson roll-ups for me, None of those nasty chemicals to keep the cigarette burning even if you left it in the ashtray. And a better flavour (IMHO).

TBF, I was at Rykas yesterday and 100s of bikers were eating yoghurt and wheat grass protein pots, green tea and roasted seed sprinkles.

I had a burger (last time i went they were good). It made the burger van in the B&Q carpark look like haute cuisine.

When was the last time you went? 1850? The burgers at Rykas have never been good.

Last time I went to Rykas was in the mid 90s on a YZF750, the burgers weren't good.

I went there once. Bit of a sad place. Let's ride to a car park and chat and be cool.

Never really likes bikers meeting points. For some folk they're the highlight of their life.

I chatted and was cool at some Memorial Meets. That involved riding to a car park. Saw quite a few people there. :D

Not much different than going to the pub - travel to a venue, sit/stand around chatting. Some people use a bus, others use a motorbike. :)

I tend to avoid bikers meeting places these days for a couple of reasons, I only get so much time to spend on a bike, so I spend that time riding it, and most people at bikers meeting places are boring knackers.

Bit like meeting ex-pats in pubs, calling in at the Ace cafe, going to watch footy in a bar with friends , any bike meet, any bike rally and the IOM TT.

It was a cental point for us meet - with friends coming from London. However lesson learned - don't eat there!
The answer @Rockburner queation last time was about a year ago, just after they had been taken over and were making a real effort.
That seems to have passed, and I suspect with the clientele they have quality doesn't matter!

That was the usual reason to go to such places - to meet up with mates or for somewhere to stop, relax and refuel with a bunch of mates on a ride. Usually not for the food (but the pilot's club at Shoreham Airport was pretty fair tbh).

Generally used to start at the car park at the top of Reigate Hill though...because the group didn't get tangled up with any other bikers there. :D (That was where Kevin Keegan got done over one night - he reckoned they didn't recognise him. I bet they did!).

Having said all that, at one or two places lile Rykas and Newlands Corner chances are I'd see someone I knew.

^ Shoreham Airport catering was taken over a while ago (I think by the group that owns the bakery "Truffles"). The food os still okay but they became sniffy about reserving tables for groups. Hence the Ducati Owners Club buggered off elsewhere (The Fountain Pub is Ashurst).
The restaurant also lost access to a lot of the downstairs- I assume just a leasing cost issue ...

There's (or there was, I don't know if the pilot's club place is still there) two options at Shoreham (Brighton International  ), The place in the main terminal which used to be all a bit 'white tablecloths' and now called The Hummingbird and the pilot's club or something like that. It had a canteen feel about it and was quite happy feeding a dozen hungry, occasionally damp, bikers with basic, but pretty decent scran. As you face the terminal entrance (nice 30s style) building from the road rather than the runway side it was off on the right in a rather functional box of a building. Although it was a club they seemed happy to serve 'drop-ins'.

I guess if one of us had a leather jacket on they thought it must be Biggles.
