One of the men who go every week has a motorcycle restoration type of business going on which I have shared some pics on a previous post of his hand made alloy tanks, and he is (to me) a unsung hero that could out engineer the likes of Alan Millyard and the likes of him. A blooming genius of a man, who I am proud to just sit in his company! Anyway, to the point. He mentioned a few weeks ago to the table of bikers that I "did paint".
On Thursday night whilst at the "club" I squashed in at the end of the table to be introduced to a man who races in (I am sorry I don't recall the proper racing names/clubs/or whatever they are called?), but it is something historic. He has only raced for a couple of years and I think he is in 2nd place in some kind of racing championship. And again, like the rest of them, he seems to be a canny enough man. It was fairly loud in the pub (me being a bit deaf, not hearing it all...) as he showed me dozens of pictures of his bikes at Goodwood, Mallory and other places which all looked great. He told me, "I have a works ex factory Norton Manx (?) bike along with another (apparently mega if you are into Brit stuff) race bike" and then asked, "Will you paint the frame on the works Norton bike and do some touch ups on the other?" And then another bloke caught me at the bar and asked if I can spray his Vincent?
My dilemma is that I only started to go to the "club" so that I could just be in the company of like minded individuals, not to push for bike work or to make money from them. I have enough stuff going on in my life already even though extra "shed money" (that funds projects and tools etc) would be nice. But I am not desperate. If I just say "No", will it make me look bad? What would you do?
On a different note, one of the men who I met this week has just come back last Sunday from (8 months) touring South America. He was laughing about having his home bike MOT'd (having only been in the UK for 4 months) and it having done 12,000 miles this year! I know people who would struggle to do 12k miles in 12 years, never mind 4 months.
