Jochen Mass, the affable German driver whose post-racing popularity almost matched his success on track in Formula 1 and sports cars, has died. He was 78.
Mass died Sunday due to complications from a stroke he had suffered in February, his family announced.
"Today we mourn the loss of a husband, father, grandfather and a racing legend," the family said on social media. "Beyond mourning his death, we celebrate his incredible life, a life he loved sharing with all of you, a life that he lived to the absolute fullest."
Mass' career began in hillclimbs with cars borrowed from the Alfa Romeo dealership where he worked, according to Autosport. From there he drove Ford Capris in the European Touring Car Championship, where he won the Spa 24 Hours in 1972.
He progressed to Formula 3, then Formula 2, and was soon in an F1, where he drove for McLaren, ATS, Arrows and the RAM March team. Over nine seasons in F1 he had 105 starts, seven podiums, two fastest laps, and one win, at the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona.

Robert “Ed” Smylie, the NASA official who led a team of engineers that cobbled together an apparatus made of cardboard, plastic bags and duct tape that saved the Apollo 13 crew in 1970 after an explosion crippled the spacecraft as it sped toward the moon, died on April 21 in Crossville, Tenn. He was 95.
His death, in a hospice facility, was confirmed by his son, Steven.
The day after the astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise returned to earth on April 17, 1970, President Richard M. Nixon awarded NASA’s mission operations team with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In his remarks, he singled out Mr. Smylie and his deputy, James V. Correale.

According to the book that came with my watch, the Apollo 13 mission was saved by the precise timing of a 14 second burn... measured with the chronometer on an Omega Speedmaster

I still can't believe we lost the light which burned so bright that was Paul Danan. So great a talent. What a terrible loss.

At the end of the movie, when Tom Hanks is doing a voice over & telling us what happened to the real characters, when he says "and as for me.." he shakes hands with Jim Lovell.KungFooBob wrote: Sat May 17, 2025 8:21 pm According to the book that came with my watch, the Apollo 13 mission was saved by the precise timing of a 14 second burn... measured with the chronometer on an Omega Speedmaster![]()

The Mercury 7 guys were at the Cape to watch an unmanned Mercury-Redstone launch. Rocket launches & promptly explodes.
Jim Lovell turns to John Glenn & says "Well I'm glad they got that out of the way..."

Jim Lovell wearing his actual Navy uniform, cause he retired from the USN as a Captain.
Bob...Omega do a special edition "snoopy" Speedmaster celebrating it's contribution to the Apollo 13 mission. The Silver Snoopy Award is a semi-official prize given by NASA to people who've made a particular contribution, they gave one to Omega in 1970.
Always seemed a little bit daft to me, any stopwatch would have sufficed. Indeed NASA knew that, which is why they decided that the Astronauts should wear watches with that function right from the get go

Re: Just Dead Celebrity Express Thread !
Mayhaps you'd be right, maybe not, 5 years on UK tv, 11 series, 132 episodes, plus other odds and sods, either way I have to google way more than 50% of the 'celebs' posted in this here thread, one mans celebrity is another's 'who?'Pirahna wrote: Tue May 27, 2025 10:38 pmAnother "celebrity" I've had to Google. Religiously delusional fuckwit con artists. This family were all clean-cut looking college boys that wouldn't have been out of place at Oxford until they stumbled on this hillybilly look & got a TV series. Wouldn't surprise me to find out their self proclaimed religious life is as fake as everything else about them.Pirahna wrote: Tue May 27, 2025 10:38 pm Another "celebrity" I've had to Google. Re: Just Dead Celebrity Express Thread !
The show is on a Fox streaming channel these days, I see trailers for it but have less than zero interest owing to the trailers being enough to inform me that they're religiously delusional fuckwits.... or is it fakewits?Felix wrote: Wed May 28, 2025 12:51 am Made them a lot of cash though.
