Would you have an electric car if you had the money for a new car and were in the market for one?

I missed the whole 3 pin plug discussion.
Depending on the size of the car- you’ll be there forever trying to charge from a plug. Before I had a home charger, I used 3 pin twice. Both times took 2 days. I don’t know if that’s something the car limited speed to or our house- but it was not in any way convenient.

Not much was said really. I don't cover a lot of miles (4k in 2.5 years on my last car) so there didn't seem any real point, or financial savings, in a c£1k home charger ad there probably isn't, or wasn't, until I came up with the man maths above.Docca wrote: Wed Apr 30, 2025 1:25 pm I missed the whole 3 pin plug discussion.

FWIW, we moved from BG to Octopus when I got the Explorer. It's works well in linking up with the charger.Taipan wrote: Wed Apr 30, 2025 12:15 pm Decided to install a home charger after all. Multiple reasons, not least because we live in an old house and not sure the wiring is up to the lengthy load of 3 pin charging? It probably is, but just in case it isnt. Also it means i have the inconvenience of having to feed the charge lead through a window and open windows are a security risk, let heat out in winter etc blah. Now i just have to work out which supplier and tariff to go with!![]()

It's just the fact you can't draw much power through 3 pins.Docca wrote: Wed Apr 30, 2025 1:25 pm I missed the whole 3 pin plug discussion.

Taipan's Tesla should get about 3 miles per kWh and it'll charge at about 2.5kWh per hour when plugged in. Thus you'll get very roughly 7.5 miles for every hour plugged in on 3 pins. If you get cheap leccy for 6hrs a night that means you can have about 45 miles of cheap running per day. If your commute is 46 miles round trip you're a bit stuck.

My dads chipped diesel Focus got 70mpg, Mums TDI Skoda/Audi estate wagon got 60mpg (no idea of the model)Taipan wrote: Wed Apr 30, 2025 8:30 am The old peugeot/Citroen 1.6Ds always gave over 70mpg and driving my old 1.5 DCi Megane to Spain we got almost 80mpg overall! That was in the 80s. Funny that all these years later we're struggling to match that and are impressed if we do!![]()

In the first stages of looking round at places, but probably wont sell this place anyway? When we do move, I don't think we'll go to Spain now though, it will be in the UK for now...v8-powered wrote: Wed Apr 30, 2025 7:15 pmYou not moving now? Re: Would you have an electric car if you had the money for a new car and were in the market for one?
There were a lot of factors going on in the background which changed things, M-i-L died, Wifes Dad and Step Dad getting very old and I have my step dad to consider as well and a couple of other issues. Moving further away from them would just make looking after them (even) harder. I'll be round to borrow a cup of sugar at some point though!v8-powered wrote: Wed Apr 30, 2025 8:52 pmAaahhh right, thought I'd missed out on having you as a near'ish neighbour.Taipan wrote: Wed Apr 30, 2025 8:06 pmIn the first stages of looking round at places, but probably wont sell this place anyway? Daughter’s id5 charges at about 6 miles, per hour on 3 pin, so an overnight charge will put in about 70 miles of that helps. No idea what it costs.

Re: Would you have an electric car if you had the money for a new car and were in the market for one?
Had a drive of the Tesla today. Still cant get my head round not starting it up and one pedal driving but it did seem less alien today. In fact, it all seemed to come together today and I really enjoyed driving it. So I think its safe to say its a keeper!
One thing that irked me a bit, was the last MOT it got advisories on 3 tyres, which the dealer replaced, but it left it with one different make. That shit triggers me!
So a new, matching tyre was ordered today.
I think I might have some fun with it and chav it up a bit.
I'm thinking dechrome, black wheels, tinted windows and full body kit!
