BEWARE of the Din plug. ☠

Last Friday I took the GS out to make sure all is good before upcoming Ireland trip. Wanted to make sure I could charge phone on the go. Din plugged in, cable to phone, yep all good.

This morning bike no starty. 10v, should be 12 or 13 and 14 . summot when running. Mate pushed me down the road to attempt a Bumpstart. 4th 5th 6th no chance, the old boxer 12 ain't made for bumping. Jumped it from car and it fire up.

Then...I noticed the Din plug had been left in socket. Well, I thought it was an ignition live but no, permanent and this little poxy plug had took enough power out of battery in 3 days to make no start. It does have a tiny led light but jeez, didn't think that would hurt.

Rode to Bala with Ireland mate and neighbour mate and all good. Moral of the story...Never leave the plug in the hole, always remove after use.

Odd, the canbus usually turns the socket off 30 seconds after the ignition is off, it's why you can't charge via din.

I thought you could charge the battery via din plug. I go straight to battery myself.

I've not tried mine, but the wife's 2016 700GS did the canbus thing.

On reading up, when ignition is switched off, it should shut down din socket after a short pot, as you say kfb. However, if it detects a draw it will keep live. Just been out to the bee hive and put the usb/c adapter in din socket. Ignition off and no light on adapter, no power. Ignition on and power on with blue light.

With ignition on and power/blue light on, turning ignition off, power and light stay on for short pot. Then for a split second off and on again. Reckon it shutting down then recognising draw and switches on again. Moral of the story, pull the fcuking adapter out.

I thought you could charge the battery via din plug. I go straight to battery myself.

You can, but you need a CANBUS charger that sends some sort of wake up pulse.

I've got the charger that can do both, far too complicated and too many light's. I went with old optimate straight to battery, like normal bikes.

If there's any corrosion on the din plug, it won't work properly. Fortunately the battery on the K12 is easy to get to.
