CB350

Post by Buckaroo »

I saw a Honda CB350S today. What a fine looking bike. It was in grey. The owner bought it for bimbling around. He also has an Africa twin.
I'm wondering if this could be a 70th birthday present for next year?

The engine is basically a Superdream engine, whether that's a good or bad thing is up to you.
They were never good sellers so you may have trouble finding one.

Only if you've removed a plug. The current CB350 is a single.

The CB350S is probably a better bike than the RE 350 Classic (tho I reckon the classic looks nicer), the Honda is a bit more fasterer.

If I was in the market for that kind of bike I'd buy a BSA Gold Star (like wot I did) or wait and see if RE launch the speculated 500cc version of the 350 Classic.

The bike being talked about is actually a GB 350S which is a single, now available in the UK, that first appeared three years ago. Just to confuse things, in some markets it's a GB while at the same time it's being called a CB350S in others. Baffling. As is the power output - 21 hp I think. So much for progress - my 1980 CB250RS (another single) puts out a claimed 26 hp.

The original CB350's were twins based on the 250 motors. The bike you're thinking of with the red Harris Magnum clone frame was the CB350S which was actually a slimmed down CB450S sold in Europe. My brother had one of the 350 versions. It was surprisingly heavy and fairly horrid but ran for ever with zero maintenance until the wiring loom shorted out and set it alight.

I have ridden the RE 350 and felt it was underpowered. No chance to try the CB350S yet, but I do like my CB500f.

I had a CD185 Benley. Got it off some old boy for buttons to sell on, but ended up keeping it as my mate scored a cheap CB200 so we had old fart bike races!

I did wonder why anyone would want that steaming pile of dung from the 80s, though the GB350S doesn't look much better.

At least the CD175 was a decent workhorse and put up with a certain level of abuse. The G5 variant CB250/360 had the full house of being slow, unreliable and handled crap even at modest speeds. Probably the worst bike Homda ever made, even worser than the VF750.

My second bike was a CD175. For a spotty 17 year old in the 1960s, 80 mph and a 10,500 rpm redline were pretty far out, man. But mine was the original 'sloper'. The later ones with upright cylinders (a la CB350/360) were fugly and not as reliable (allegedly).

At one of those Performance Bike "events" at Cadwell Park, someone taped the throttle wide open on a CD175. Was still revving its nuts off when I walked off after about 20 minutes.

Yes they were.

The first Honda CB250 (twin) was introduced in 1967, with the CB350 twin (based on the 250 motors) being introduced a year later (1968 for the hard of understanding). The CB350 four was introduced in 1972 and only sold in the USA and certain European markets (not the UK). The 350/4 was modelled on the larger 750 and 500cc 4 cylinder motors, but didn't sell well. The twins sold by the bucket-load.

My Dad bought a 1968 250 k0 in red/white with the black rubbers on the tank. Apparently good for 100 according to MCN at the time.
I’m pretty sure the tacho showed the redline at 10.5. (K1’s and beyond were lower)
Traded for a Green/black 350 in 72 and then the bright red 400/4 in 75.
