How can you tell if a bike is MOT exempt ?

If its over 40 years old and not significantly modified or on a Q reg, its MOT exempt, the Historic Vehicle thing is merely a tax class where the amount due is £0

You do have to apply for Historic Vehicle status/tax class. It's not granted automatically once the vehicle reaches 40 y.o. And it only becomes eligible on the 1st April of the year after its 40th anniversary of registration.

You have to apply for the tax class, but you can carry on taxing the bike with no MOT if you want to

I'm not sure why anyone would want to do that, and have never seen any official guidance to that effect, but I'll take your word for it.

That was my interpretation of what it says on the UK Gov website and from downloading the form, but I could be wrong

My bro just picked up a 79 bike there was some confusion at the post office when he went to register it as historic.
One person said you need the v112 then another said you didn't.
Then I started to wonder if my CG had been registered with the v112.

Anyway both bike have historic on the V5 and cost £0 to tax so it looks like we are ok

All the V112 says is that you've signed to say you don't think it needs an MOT, it really is quite laughable.
