Think there's a time and a place for them, just don't know when and where. Customs probably, big fat noisy bikes probably, what else. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Why are they (mostly) placed on the left, when Britain drives on the left? Surely most easily seen, along with the rear light, when placed on the right hand side?

Asymmetrical, awkward, aerodynamically pants, just a tad pointless.

Add them to the bar-end mirrors list of "misguided improvements but hey - it's your bike"

In answer to your 'friend', I'd say do what they like. Worse case they hate it and can change it back. However, they might think it looks well nifty, to them, and hell that's all that counts. Who gives a toss about other people, I mean some of them wear Crocs FFS.

A top box says 'I don't care what you or anyone else thinks'.

'Cool anything' says 'Oh my, people are looking at meeeee!

You are mistaking me giving a shit about cool  Top boxes are practical, cool doesn't help me put stuff in so it can do one.

I'd sooner an Aldi carrier bag hanging from the handlebars than a top box, and it'd be less "aerodynamically pants" :obscene-birdiedoublered:

Reminds me of a mate back in the 90s, he bought a TV in Watford. And it being the 90s, you went in and bought a TV in a box and walked out with it. It was only at the walking out of the shop stage he stopped to wonder how he'd get it back on his KR1S  One handed and it being balanced on the tank was the answer

I often bought tyres and rode home with it round my waist and on the tank.

I remember doing exactly that in the early 80s'; Buying a pair of tyres at Darley Moor circuit and riding home on my LC with them round my waist and resting on tank and seat.

My theory was that if I crashed at least there'd be rubber between me and the road... :)

Following a couple of Harleys earlier, both had side hanging plates but one was also side on iykwim. You'd have to tilt your head to 9 o'clock to read it, sort of thing. Looked a bit dodgy to me. Not sure what plod would say on that. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Are we still talking about wearing it round the waist to look better?

The really weird thing is, they look okay on the left hand side, but juts plain wrong on the right hand side!
